they are targeted towards different uses so there is no use comparing the 1ds and the 1d
and yes do expect a 1ds mark iii in the near future

what type of photos do you want to take, because 1ds mark II and III are built for sports photography, and to give you the high fps, and boy is it fast.....but the other im not so sure...higher mega pix means more processing per photo which means the colors may be more accurate, i guess

I shoot a 1dmkii, and use it for parkour and tricking shots, it suits me well. Anthything else I shoot with a 5D.

You just bought a new camera, so why don't you put it to some good use instead of starting another mind-numbing 'speculation' topic.

@geniusofnati: 1Ds MKII is not built for sports. It only shoots 4 fps and is a full frame 16.7 megapixel camera. The 1D MKII N is the sports camera with a 1.3X crop and 8.5 fps and 8.2 megapixels. To me, it sounds like the Mark III is a replacement for the Mark IIN and not the 1Ds Mark II.

I'd suggest a good operational criterion to determine which model is the "flagship" is to see which one costs the most.

From trusted sources I heard that a 1ds mk III with a larger (24 MP sensor) was/is in the works but the Canon guys realized that they would create all kinds of problems with it.
- Now their lenses seem to be the bottleneck as these were unable to deliver the details needed for 24 MP.
- The additional file size (factor 1.5) slowed down the speed and number of frames that could be taken in a row.
That makes the step from 1D mk IIN to 1D mk III appear much more logical.
FWIW, I'll stick with the 1ds mk II and the 1D mk IIN. Right now I do not see the need to upgrade. For me, and from an image quality point-of-view the 1Ds mk II is still "the top of the heap".

Some might say there is no 'flagship'.
The two models you mention are targeted at entirely different markets.
It's as ludicrous as asking is a landscape/portrait photographer more important than a sports/photojournalist.
If you want to make a step up from the 30D - the camera that broke your bank - head towards a 5D.
Otherwise start shooting more so you'll have a need for one of Canon's flagship 1 series models.
