I've heard horrible things about the owners of I Love NY Pizza from other State students... I can't verify any of it, but it's enough to keep me out of there. :-/

Guarinos Italian Restaurant
1503 Buck Jones Road, Raleigh, NC 27606

Out of the way (i.e. hard to find) family owned place. There are three or four generations working usually.

Sicilian w/ pepperoni is amazing.

Best coffee: Every morning I stop at "Global Village" coffee shop on Hillsborough Street, right across from NCSU. It's really good coffee, and the atmosphere in the shop is perfect for a liberal hippie like me.

What would be your second choice of shoot spot? I've kinda passed through my buddhist temple period. Also, I'd vote for food and/or beverages first.

woods.

Sunday services are at 11:30 a.m., and consist of prayer,

around 10:00. The temple is always unlocked and available
for visitation. The Temple also offers classes in
Vietnamese. Right now, the classes are targeted toward
children, but the teachers are trying to rally support for
adult classes as well.
This is a Vietnamese temple and monastery, and all services
are conducted in Vietnamese. Currently only one monk lives
here.

Pants, I think you're right. That's the word I heard from from my daughter, who's a student at State. But she raves about I <3 NY Pizza. (Don't tell her, Chris!)

Not to push out the North Raleigh photoshoot location ideas, but what about a community service project? We could document the destruction of the Fayetteville Street Mall. I'm sure this group could elevate the insanity going on there into an art form. (Wait... that didn't sound quite right....) We could take some pretty pictures of some pretty ugly goings on. How's that?

We could meet pre- or post-shoot anywhere, but I personally feel this destruction project is a travesty being pushed on our fair city, and deserves to be captured. It's a little like watching a train wreck: so many bad things are happening so quickly that you're just stunned into a frozen silence.

Maybe it was watching the goldfish tanks being drained today behind the courthouse that pushed me over the edge. Not sure if they salvaged the little guys or not before pulling the plug. Sad.

Apologies to anyone here who thinks three lanes of blacktop and 70+ parking spaces will revamp Raleigh.

I hate the community and I hate their little goldfish too! Actually, I didn't read that post initially, and I haven't consumed a lot of local news so I don't know a thing about this mall. I will read up, but I doubt I'll feel stirred up enough to go stand vigil, general suckiness of malls notwithstanding.

O.K., I see they're re-opening a pedestrian zone to cars. Are they knocking down any buildings? Why are goldfish dying?

tsmyther  Pro User  says:

Fayetteville Street Mall was created in the 1970's as a pedestrian zone for three blocks between the Capital and the Civic Center. The idea was for there to be restaurants, fountains, trees, art, and people meandering about, rather than cars.

Over the last few years, the Downtown Merchants Association has convinced themselves, the city council, and anyone else that has a voice that this pedestrian zone is a bad idea, and they need to cut down the trees, rip up all the nice paving stones, pull down the statues, rip out the fountains, and destroy the two goldfish/lily ponds that were outside of the Wake County Courthouse.

In place of the planting beds, fountains and marble benches, they want to put 2 lanes of traffic with parallel parking on either side. For three blocks (between Morgan Street and Davie Street). It's only going to cost $10-12 million. And will bring everyone flocking to downtown Raleigh, to fight over those 70 parking spaces, no doubt.

I'm not one to stand vigil either, but I do think we as photographers should grab the last vestiges of what's there, and document the move to the new. Heck, even if it turns out to be a great thing, complete with flying pigs, it'd be a great addition to the Raleigh Pool here on flickr.

O.K. Thanks for the elaboration. Reminds me of the outrage I felt when Blockbuster built a store near me and they chopped down the century-old city-owned trees along the store front so that drivers could have an unobstructed view of their towering neon sign. Still, I don't know where I stand on depedestrianizing if it was meant to fulfil some economic purpose that it's failed to fulfil. Hey, at least the aesthetic vision being destroyed is from the 70's.

[bump]

my favorite restaurant right this moment happens to be Neomonde, mentioned above... fantastic food, and fast and friendly service are all hallmarks of a greatly thought out place of business.

as there are only two camera stores in Raleigh [pipe up you non-raleigh Raleighites!] i like Peace for the equipment, and I like SouthEastern for the people. *IF* SE could have some more items in stock at any given moment [like when i need a CTO gel and they dont hardly have any at all] then i'd be more dedicated. that everything is priced within a few dollars of each other is cool and a fine testament to corporate spying.

favorites for shooting abound. there is absolutely no quadrant within Wake County, Orange County, Durham County, or Johnson County that odes not have at least something nice to point at.
i guess it really all boils down to what you want to shoot, as in "animal, vegetable or mineral"

relaxing, for myself, is generally being away from everyone. lots of places to do that, so if i told you, you'd come find me and ruin my day =)

Drinking:
* Landmark Tavern on Hargett St near Moore's Square - very cozy joint, and also very photographer friendly (both by being a photogenic establishment and by encouraging photographers to explore it)

* Flying Saucer (best draught beer selection in town)

* Sawmill Taproom (best draught beer selection in north Raleigh)

* O'Malley's - if you like really seedy pubs that cater to the cheap beer and loose women crowd (loose men for that matter, too), you'll like this place. The food is surprisingly good Irish fare. If you like rowdy seedy Irish pubs with loud music, dancing, billiards, etc. this might be to your liking.

Coffee - New World Coffee House - great for a light lunch, as well. Some others like Helios more.

Camera shop - I've been patronizing Peace Camera pretty regularly. Sticker prices are high on many items but not carved in stone.

Places to chill out - see coffee shops and bars above.

I don't yet have a favorite restaurant. Perhaps because too much of my expendable cash goes to Peace Camera to afford to eat out very often. Wendy's has a great 99 cent menu.

If I'm feeling flush I like to eat at Waraji for sushi and Tony's Bourbon St Oyster Bar for oysters. I'm pretty much a pedestrian drinker - gimme a Bud or a PBR and I'm happy.
