taking off safety eyes?

I know this is a silly question but I wondered if there was a way to take off safety eyes after you put the washers on them. I know it defeats the purpose but I had put the washers on before I was supposed to for an animal I'm making!

Thanks in advance!

I find that swearing and growling is the appropriate response when this happens!

I use a pair of small needle-nosed pliers (like you would use in jewellery-making) to pry the little spikes back on the washers. You usually only have to do a couple before it's loose enough to come off. You can then just bend them back in place and use the washer again.

(This is just for the metal washers, of course; I've never used the plastic ones...)

If you have another pair...
You can pull the current eyes back into the head by pulling them through the stitches, and pull them out, then replace them with the new pair. I've had to do it a few times because I placed them wrong.

I recommend doing this in private, because your vocabulary is not appropriate for public ears. It has happened to me as well - I also use the same method as Yarniganrachel - i gently pull the eyes out through the stitch and place the new pair in. The plastic washers are next to impossible to remove, hence the name "safety eyes" :-)

I have used two pair of small, jewelry makers needle nose pliers to get the washers off after gently pulling the eyes through the stitches. Hold the eye part with one and pull the washer with the other.
