Funny Bug
 |
Hi, I live in Honolulu and am trying to find out what this "bug" is. I have found them in the bathroom and kitchen. The bodyis flat and looks like it has a rough texture, and is about a 1/4" long. There is a "foot" that it uses to move it can protrude from either side of the body. I thought that maybe the outside was some sort of cocoon but not sure, it does have a very thin thread like substance it uses to stay attached to walls. What is this, i'm so curious. Please help! Thanks.

Great description! I think you might have what is called a "household case-bearing moth". The "body" is somewhat a diamond shape?
If so, this species is named Phereoeca allutella. It naturally occurs from Africa, India and the Pacific Islands, but is probably not native to Hawaii. The adult moth is very small by comparison with the case-carrying larvae. The case is made up of silk and particulate material. The are usually most abundant in dark, damp places - like your bathroom and kitchen.

Thank you. My 5 yr old guessed butterfly. We were racking our brains for months. We love trying to find and speculate about out of the ordinary plant and animals this one took the cake. Your description makes a whole lot of sense.
