I'm a beginner first of all so something that's not too complicated would be nice, I'm interested in taking wildlife pictures but I would also like to do some portraits. But I am on a budget of about £400-£500 at most. At the moment the Nikon D60 looks like a good bet, but I would appreciate insight on whether that's a good choice or recommendations :)

I love my D50, they are not being sold now (new anyway) so depending on how much you want/need I would say D40, D40x, or D60.

d40 is a good bet. but the better thing to do is practice with a point and shoot first. buy a "prosumer" camera fromthere [ractice. till you out grow your camera. prosumers are not to be belittled since they also have manual settings and some takes very good shot in high ISO levels.
look at the canon g9. if you really want a DSLR, 450d and d40x are my bet. :D. i hope i helped you in some way.:)
