I just want to say how much I love both of these images, and for me, they're too close to make a decision on. Good luck with the voting!

I agree with skinr. The challenger seems to have stolen a portrait out of a chaotic scene. The incumbent portrait is very compelling but I think what makes the challenger slightly more interesting is that the scene may or may not have existed without the human in the shot. Having found the shot with the guy in there makes it the winner.

I agree with Tiler, I like how the man looks disheveled. He almost looks like Albert Einstein. The pigeons flying around him bring some action into the picture.

tacubagurl's comment does not count as a vote as it lacks a reason.

Both pictures are really fantastics but the challenger got the eyes of this man. Mixed with the situation it can tell a long story, what the defender is not doing even if the defender picture is a great portrait with perfect composition and graphic.

The expression of the challenger's photo is most interesting IMO. However, I feel that the pigeons actually distract from the photo. The defender's is a classic, technically superior photograph. The stare, textures of the beard and hair and the tight crop wins my vote.

While definitely a good shot, I find the background in the challenger to be a bit too cluttered. It takes away from the central focus of the photo. My vote goes to the simpler portrait.

I think that the interaction between the subject and camera in the defender's shot is much deeper and thoughtful than the challenger's. The pigeon man looks a bit dazed, and overall I do not like the composition.

Even though he liveliness in pigeons is supposed to make the challenger shot interesting, I feel it is actually over crowding the frame and causing unwanted blurriness. No doubt light and face is nice.
Defender is a classic. Light, framing, everything comes together in it make it one of 100. I'll conclude this one too:
