I think a lots forks at TO get a ticket of $110 in the lest few days for not have a bell on their bike, cops were camping right out side the bike shop that i work at, and a lady that was trying out a bike in front of the shop got charge for not having a bell on the bike she was riding. I know for most of the riders, a bell may not be the best tool, but i just want to give everybody a heads up.

It's odd where there are laws about this. Technically, in Maryland, we need "signaling devices" that you can hear 100 feet away. But no one ever enforces anything. I do like the growing number of commuters who are rocking bells around here, though. Much more musical than car horns:)

I love having a bell. I have no idea if it's required here, but I would not ride without one. I use it to warn traffic all the time.

I love bells too. Especially the old fashioned ones with that distinctive ratcheting-ringing sound. Everyone on the planet knows there's a bike nearby when they hear that sound.

Get active bike commuters. If your speaking your mind in your community or using a bell tell us about it here. Make this an active group. Bicycles rules and so do bells. Ride on!

Best audible warning device I've found is my voice, it rarely breaks down, is easy to activate, can vary from a soft "bike on your left" to a very loud "DOOR!" and is a lot quicker response than most of the bells, horns, hooters etc

FWIW, in situations where I feel the bell is "too much", but I want to make sure peds know I am coming, I whistle a happy tune.

Germany requires bells, but prohibits loud ones.

(Just as they require lights, and prohibit bright ones)
