State of the Pool?

view profile

Rick Leche  Pro User  says:

Is there a way to determine the state of the pool? i.e. # of species vs. the # of species images in the pool? History is being made in this pool, as it develops into the finest on-line avian identification database available!

Without Alastair's summary page, I don't know of any reliable way.

I can say how many species there are in the hyperlink index, but

a) if anyone has removed photos from the pool or re-identified them, I may not have been notified to remove the species from the index. This is unlikely to have affected more than a tiny number of species.

b) if anyone has added photos of new species to the pool which aren't in the index. If people notify me, or tag the photos FBW:newbird I can add them, but otherwise it's only if I happen to notice that they get added.

I used to be able to compare the list in the hyperlink index with Alastair's summary list which identified any discrepancies, but now it's just down to someone letting me know. The number of new species added to the index has gone down significantly since Alastair's summary stopped being available: I don't suppose the number of new species being added to the pool has really gone down quite so dramatically, though it may have tapered off a bit.

There are currently 4572 species in the hyperlink index (not counting distinctive subspecies that are also indexed), representing just over 46% of the world's species. There are just short of 60,000 photos in the pool.

If anyone finds any species represented in the pool which aren't in the index, please either tag the photo FBW:newbird or notify me some other way.
