is there a red light showing in the viewfinder when you press the shutter release ? It sounds like the film is wound on but the shutter isn't releasing for whatever reason. Just in case, check if the lens is mounted correctly.

does it fire without the lens on? does it fire without the back on? does it fire without either of those on?

Actually yeah, thats a good test. Take off the lens and back and try and fire the shutter after winding. The shutter should not fire, you should get the red light in the viewfinder. Now switch the multiple exposure lever on . You might have to wind the shutter on again a half turn or so. Now try and fire the shutter, this should work. If that doesn't work then there's something wrong with something on your bronnie.

Did you try switching the multiple exposure lever to the opposite position that it is.

there are two levers on the side of the bronica. One, the closest one to the top of the camera, is the multiple exposure lever. The other one is the mirror lockup lever. both of them pointing UP is the default position (at least on my SQAi , I'm presuming its the same on the SQ-a here). In the default position the mirror isn't locked up, and you won't be able to take a shot without advancing the film. There has to be a lens attached and a film back attached with film in it, and the darkslide removed before the camera will allow you to release the shutter.
With JUST the multiple exposure lever switched (so that the lever is down and pointing toward the front of the camera) then you can test to see if there is a problem with the body by removing the lens and the film back, winding on the shutter until the wind lever won't progress any more, and hitting the shutter release. The mirror and rear light baffle should flip up as though a shot was taken. Winding on will make the mirror come down again, and cock the shutter (or at least move the two pins in the lens mount that cock the shutter).
Here's the manual (from butkus). Might be a good idea to give this the once over incase you're misunderstanding something ...
