when you stopped down, did you press the dof preview lever on the lens? the aperture will stay wide open unless you press this lever or fire the shutter.

I just tried it and it's really hard to push it. I think maybe it's sticky or something.

the lever that slides is the "t" lever. it allows you to do long exposures in bulb mode without having to hold the shutter button. the dof preview pushes into the body of the lens.

It could just be the preview mechanism. Another way to test is to remove the camera back, set the multiple exposure lever on, and open the shutter with an exposure of several seconds.
If you do this with the aperture ring set to something like f/8, you should see the aperture blades stopped down during the exposure.

the dof lever pushes into the body on 'S' lenses and slides down on 'PS' lenses...it should be obvious. so, do you have a camera for the lens, or just a lens??
