altering 3835?

I've noticed that a few people have mentioned altering this pattern. I'm fairly new to sewing, and I can see how you could add darts or waist-shaping to the zippered dress version, but the over-the-head top is stumping me.

If I take it in at the sides, giving them a bit of a curve, will it mean I can't get it over my head? (Or will it make it tough to get it back off? What do I know, I'm a newbie!) I'm a knitter and used to the huge amount of stretch knitted fabric gives and I don't want to mess up with unstretchable woven fabrics.

I made a shirt using this pattern, but I used the neckl/collar from the dressses, didn't do the elastic on the sleeves, and put one pocket on the front. I don't remember what the back closure is originally like on the pattern, but I put in a ribbon loop and sewed on a button. I didn't mess with the fit (adding darts, adjusting waist curve, whatever) because it was already a more snug fit and I like the straight shape of it.

So it wasn't any crazy altering, just kind of combining elements from all the designs?

I made the top in a non-stretch cotton blend just as it is on the pattern (elastic neck) but added the darts. I didn't need to add in the zipper. And I have not-wide-but-not-very narrow-either-shoulders and a D sized bust.

sewandsox, can you say a little more about how you added the darts? I've never sewn a top before & I think you & I have similar shapes. Any advice at all would be very appreciated!

has anyone lined this dress (the one with the arm ties)? Speaking of arm ties, is it easy to not have the ties but still have some sort of cuff?

I just made this top. I ignored the pattern sizing and now it's a bit siug to get on and off. In the next top I thought about possibly inserting an invisible zipper in the center one of the side seams so I could add darts to add some waist shaping. I've seen this done in many ready to wear on close fitting tops.
