Stupid "Hit Me" Sign...
 |
So I've just posted the pics from two, yes, TWO hit-and-run accidents that I've had in the last four months.
The first is the totalled Pontiac Sunfire that we used to have until a guy blew through a stop sign; I hit him at what felt like fairly low speed (because I was in a strange neighborhood and was driving cautiously, and had time to hit the brakes) but which set off the airbags, so it must have been fifteen mph at least. My injuries: two tiny bruises from the airbag. Didn't even bump my nose.
Injuries to the car were more substantial, as you can see from the photos.
Twerp drove off, went through at least two more stop signs, then caused ANOTHER accident just a few blocks away! To top it all off, he then attempted to run... but must have been caught as I got subpoenaed as a witness in his trial. (Case resolved before it went to trial.)
Anyway. Problems with the insurance company, mostly with not returning calls. And the fact that their "negotiable offer" turned out to be unnegotiable. But we used the paltry sum on our PAID OFF car to get a down payment on a new one, a Ford Freestyle with three rows of seats... and a five star safety rating. And a better insurance company.
And problems there because the car company sent our loan to Chase instead of to our bank as we'd requested, problems which took three months to resolve properly, problems for which we got the final paperwork last week.
Which brings us to Tuesday. Husband in the drivers seat, his cousin riding shotgun, his mother and her sister in the middle row, and me in the back right seat. With the headrest up. Good thing.
We pull out of the parking lot, get in the turn lane... and get rear-ended by an extended-cab fullsize Chevy truck. Which then proceeds to back up and drive away!
However... the second thing out of my mouth was "Get his license plate!" and the cousin did just that... as did the person first in the line of bang-bang-bang, who followed the jerk while on the phone to the CHP. So all is well, since five-star safety rating means we're undamaged, as is mother-in-law's Danish plate that was in her luggage, right in between my seat and the impact.
Everybody's been asking me if I've got a magnet for this kind of idiocy. Well, if I do, it's new... since I managed well over a decade without any such altercations of metal. But today after church I saw the priest blessing somebody's new car.
It might feel a bit silly, but better safe than sorry... :)
Anyone else with the crazy stories and the invisible "Hit Me" sign?

Why can't good ( but a bit lenghty ) posts like the one above find no commenters?
We need to interact fellas. Dragonweaver, you're one lucky guy. But life can be just that more bit interesting with this tiny mishaps in life. We're blessed to have them ( provided we live to boast about it! )
I came across a site earlier this week featuring some weird, funny and freaky videos and images: Freaky and Funny Videos ( Freak Zone! ).
It is sort of interesting too. Haven't seen any invisible 'hit-me' signs yet. Maybe I've got to look around more often!
PS: Some direct links to some crazy and fraky car crash videos:

Dragonweaver, you should be at least a bit satisfied at this!

One of my groups~
DUI and / or UNINSURED Driver /
www.flickr.com/groups/uninsured_driver_auto/
Volvos saved our lives twice from 'alleged DUI' drivers that were uninsured. Also in-between I was rear-ended by another uninsured driver. 30 years ago, hubby was hit head-on while he was driving a Volvo, so he's had his life saved three times in horrible wrecks in which two of the three cars were totaled.
Three times in less than 7 months. First and third by 'alleged DUI' drivers, all three were uninsured. Third was a hit and run. We chased while I was on the phone with 911. He was caught. No, I refuse to call them accidents; they chose to drive while under the influence and or uninsured.
The first wreck, 9-23-05, put hubby of 25 1/2 years & I in the trauma center hospital in our large metro area; me one night, him two nights. I was knocked out and don't remember the wreck. We both escaped death by millimeters - centimeters. Hubby left the hospital using a walker. He later went to a cane, and in just over a month was walking unaided. Before this he could do one-legged squats! He now can do them again!
Second wreck, the guy was uninsured and chose to drive that way. That wasn't an accident, it was a choice. He only got a ticket for no insurance. He didn't get a ticket for rear-ending me. I was waiting at a red light, minding my own business. I was on my way to physical therapy and later a massage from injuries from wreck#1. Instead I had to cancel and be checked by the medics (who recognized us from the first wreck... this in a suburb of 96,000 people). After, hubby drove me to the hospital. I was driving and the only one in this wreck.
Third wreck, another alleged DUI. This one I remember vividly. We heard the guy's little car before we saw it speeding around the back of a semi stopped at a red light, as he tried to straighten it out, he lost control and started turning in circles heading straight for us. Hubby went from outside lane all the way onto the sidewalk to try to avoid the guy. He did a good job of sideswiping us anyway. Afterward, we drove ourselves to the trauma center & camped out in the waiting room overnight waiting to be seen. Necks and backs were re injured!
The end result is that we have to call them 'alleged DUI' drivers cuz they both got their DUIs dropped. One because the blood sample wasn't labeled correctly. The other one, the hit and run, no one has told me why his DUI was dropped. When I spoke in court, the judge appeared to realize what was going on and he gave the guy what I think equaled 32 weekends in jail (if he only was there on weekends.)
The real end result: it's over 2 years since the first wreck, 9-23-05; almost two years from the second one, 2-21-06; and almost two years from the third wreck, 4-1-06 (no joke!). I was almost a widow at 47 years of age. Now my hubby is 57, I'm 49, and we see no possibility of retirement because the system is not for the victim, but works well for the defendant.
Yes, three wrecks in less than 7 months. I totally understand why people make the jokes or comment about us being a target. They also totally understand me when I reply that it's not us, it's the people on the road that shouldn't be there.
This DUI driver killed three and injured others, then fled to Ireland and changed his name to elude prosecution.

Three killed, he gets 14 years in prison!

We met the father of Stacy Morris, one of the three killed, when we attended a DWI Victim's Panel. No, we weren't required to attend. It's the DUI drivers that are to attend. We asked to be able to attend because we felt so out on a limb, thrown into this situation, then left totally to fend for ourselves. We were injured, but had no broken bones, weren't maimed, and death wasn't involved. That's what has to happen to have a support system.
www.boingboing.net/2006/04/01/swoop-and-squat-car-.html Marks post on the swoop and sqwat rear-endings just happend to be on the day the second 'alleged DUI' driver hit us.
