Pastors can be AWESOME

Hey everyone I just wanted to brag a bit on my pastor, worship leader and church (they deserve it)

They are giving me much needed support (and permission!) to grow in an area where fine artists are free to express themselves in worship. They want our church to be a place where creativity and artistic expression have a high importance... much more important than it was ever before.

Even though the budget is tight (who's isn't these days???) they still let me purchase some much needed supplies.

but yeah, they are now really placing a high value on fine artists and their talents and their work.

thanks for posting this....when we all work together and realize we're all on the same team, amazing things happen. one person sings the songs, one guy designs the graphics, one person preaches the message...and God is honored.

we are about to lose our pastor of 35 years to retirement. we have only been here the past 9 years. he was contemporary when no one else was, he has re-invented himself, poured into other leaders and worked tirelessly to remain relevant. it has been tougher for him these past 4 years because of health issues and in his own words, he's tired.

not a perfect guy, by his own admission.

we have begun the grieving process.
change will be hard.

Though not perfect, my "pastor" who is also my friend and partner in ministry, is pretty great when it comes to the "creative" side of things. He's got no talent, no creativity, and no skill in that area, but yet he is constantly pushing me to innovate, create, and pwn in my area of ministry.

We don't see eye to eye about everything, but the one huge thing that I love to brag about him is that he sees value in people and their gifts. I'm not just a commodity.

You see, when I first came on full-time at the church I was hired as the student pastor. After a year of doing that and on the side contributing to the music/media ministry as well, it became painfully obvious that I'm a mediocre to good (at best) student pastor, but that I excel in the arena of music/design.

So we moved me. Not a "sorry it didn't work out, see ya later" move. Not a "we're letting you go because you're not what we're looking for" move.

But a "You are one of my best friends, and partners in ministry, and you buy into the vision of what we're doing here, so please stay" move.

No salary change. No office change. No awkwardness. Just a move from mediocre to what potentially could be great!

Awesome.

@noolie- How great is that to be able to play when you need encouragement! (why was it the back of his head though??)

The pastor I work for has been wonderful for me, he is perfect at being able to squeeze the best out of me just when I think I can't go on! He is great at communicating what he wants and then letting it go and trusting me. If he could be considered a boss I'd say he was the best one I've ever had.

The whole staff has been great, and even though I free-lance for them I never feel like I am not part of the team when it comes to a project.

Its been very encouraging to hear all the good stories! Thanks for starting it

@Beth that was an angle that I had asked for. They were taping a series intro. The name of the series is "Spectator" and the series graphic (that I haven't designed yet) is going to be of the back of someone's head with a football field in the background. Wanted to tie the video in.

Just though I share this. This is part of a email I received from our Lead Pastor this morning. I love where I work!

I'm asking some staff some specific questions as I pray about our future. Please don't read anything into it. Know that I am pleased to have you on the team and you hard work is appreciated. Please take time to consider this questions and reply asap.

1. What surprised you the most about being on staff, both positively and negatively?

2. How has your family adjusted since you joined the staff?

3. Do you have any general, or specific, observations about being on staff?

4. How well do you understand what you are supposed to be doing?

5. Do you have the tools and resources necessary to do your job?

6. What is your biggest frustration?

7. Does anything we do not make sense to you, or seem to be off-purpose?

As a pastor of a smaller church (about 110) we try to stay on a creative edge. My question to you guys is this. How many times has your Church been though various "cycles of growth" spiritually, creativally and numerically? I have been at our Church as lead for 9 years, im a little tired yet I want to be strong for staff and leaders. www.crosspointwlr.com any advice would be awesome, thanks!
