CTA-Photography Rules

hi all,

does anybody know where i can get information regarding photography in CTA property? i looked everywhere in the CTA website but i got nothing.

the only thing i know is that it is illegal to take photos in the subway. however, today i was photographing the streets while standing on the platform of the California Blue Line stop and then the train conductor told me that i wasn't allowed to take photos and told me to leave the CTA property.

i really want to clear this up. any help will be appreciated.

I had two cops make me stop a year or so ago at the Adams Street elevated station in the Loop. CTA is considered a municipal corporation, making it 'private' property, erego they get to make the rules. I forget who I got in touch with, but the rules were basically, if you're doing any serious shooting, ie long lens, tripod, etc., you'd have to fork out I think about 400 bucks a day to have a supervisor accompany you to assure you didn't get injured and to assure that passengers and traffic were not interfered with, as well as no photos of anything denegrating to the CTA is photographed, ie graffiti, suicides, etc.. I still sneak in my share of discreet shots, but after my encounter with Chicago's finest, and being informed of the massive amount of money they charge, relatively for a poor little shooter like me, I've been very picky about when and where I shoot along the CTA.

i've done my fair share of shooting on CTA property with no harrassment, but then again i try to be as inconspicuous as possible. i've not done any tripod setups or anything but i have shot with a big white 70-200mm on platforms and on trains from time to time. doing it without being seen by cta employees is the catch.

ok, i emailed them and here's what i got:

-----------------------
It is not illegal to take snapshots in the public areas of CTA rail stations as long as doing so does not cause a disturbance, such as taking a photo of another customer over his or her objection. We do, however, require a permit for photography that involves tripods, lights and other subsidiary equipment that can be obstructive or cause a safety concern.

Get them to mail you a hard copy of that, so you'll have it CTA stationary to show the security guards.

I've shot plenty on the CTA without any issue. Even at the O'hare blue line station. I always assumed it was okay to take pics in the subway, just like NYC...

Although this conductor didn't seem to happy to have a 20D+17-40 in his face.
