Hunley Funeral & Intro
 |
Hello I’d like to introduce some of my shots that I have uploaded for your comments and enjoyment. I had the pleasure of photographing what was being called the last act of the Civil war – The burial and celebration of the 3rd crew of the H.L. Hunley’s in Charleston SC - April 2004. This civil war vessel was the world’s first successful attack submarine and the first to sink an enemy vessel (USS Housatonic) in combat. At the time of the discovery of its final resting place my brother was working for the dive shop that was working with Clive Cussler the novelist in order to find her. As you can see I had unprecedented access to the activities that week and have many more shots that are not included in this upload (Around 20 rolls of film…yes film). I really do not want to post all of the shots here and take away from others(I have over 600 from this event), but there are many others posted on my Flickr account. These sets can be appreciated best by the slide show feature – I have purposely created sepia toned and the original color shot side by side so you can see a transformation from yester-year to modern times! Please let me know what you think! Activities included re-enactments at Patriots Point, lying in state aboard the Aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, Facial Reconstructions, Archeological & Forensic lectures, Funeral procession and the internment at Magnolia Cemetery where the first two crews are buried! Please enjoy these photos and hopefully some of you will know some of these re-enactors in the shots – because I’d love for them to have a copy!
