Another thing may be, on the top of the screen is a plastic "bump" which when closed pushes down on the top of the case. Where my crack is seems to line up exactly where that bump is.

I'm with Ben on that. Also keep in mind that the MacBook is held shut by magnets. And whenever I open it, I have the impression those magnets are rather strong - possibly too strong for the purpose.
See the Pimp My MacBook group for magnetic strength.
My dealer also said that the top case just rests on a very small rim of the MacBook's shell, so the force is really concentrated there. The fact that the case is hollow beneath the case (as can be seen on some of the photos here) probably makes cracks more likely as well.

It is very likely that damages will appear on both side if they are cause by the magnets. If you check the photos in this group, most cracks only found on one side!

Its not your hand its where the plastic ridge at the top of the screen at either side strike the casing when closing:

I agree with most of you, it appears quite logical that the combination of repeated magnetic closing on a focal point and constant but oscillating hand pressure on a flexible surface when typing would break such a thin piece of plastic after a while.
It also seems that there aren't so many people having their macbooks break in such a way. It therefore seems quite clear that we have a flawed piece of equipment and that Apple should recall our machines or replace / repair at no expense.

Id agree, it wasnt your fault that it cracked. Its the plastic bump pushing too hard against the the plastic. Mine did crack on both sides, this happened to me at the same time as the shutdown problem so i took it back and got a replacement.
I think that apple were quite good about getting me a new one, on the phone they were totally useless, in store they were helpful.

my girlfriend get the exact same crack problem with her macbook bought in september 2006 in germany -2 weeks ago..it s cover free of charge by the warranty. let see what will happen to mine which i bought in us in october 2006
it would be interested to know when you bought your laptops or better the production time...it seems that it could also be a miss handling of the molding process or plastic batch preparation.
>Might be interesting to see if the replacement piece are showing a different thickness than the original broken ones.

Mine has cracked exactly the same way on both the left and the right side.. I think this is due to the magnetic latch and the raised area clamping down on it everytime it shuts - anyone had this replaced yet by Apple.. I need to sort mine.

It looked to me like it was the magnetic latch that caused it. BTW, we had to bring the MacBook (late 2006) to the Apple Store because the hard drive died (yes, it was backed up!) and they fixed the crack at the same time. I didn't even have to bring it up to the genius. She just saw it and put an order in to fix that as well.

Im very new to this, bought my Macbook in april 2008, and just today, July 24 i found crack on my computer. First on the right side then it appeared on the left side as well.. Im shocked since the computer is only 3 months old!! I been reading some of your experiences with this dilemma, and I was just wondering if anyone knows if the warranty is international?? I bought it in Barcelona, Spain but now going home to Sweden.. What I can remember the guy who sold it to me said its international warranty but just want to be sure..
And, will it be free of charge?? Think its pretty shitty when you buy a computer then it breaks, and on top of that, should have to pay for it..
Would be really happy if someone could help me since im clueless in computers, however, i am veeery careful with it. I always carry it around in my computer bag, never dropped it or anything like tht..
Thanks
Annika

I wish I had found this group before I had my war with Apple.
In the end, cooler heads prevailed and they fixed my laptop..
This is after they told me the 755$ story..
and that it was liquid damaged AND
abused
and there is now way that keyboard cover could crack like that.......
I had BOTH left and right sides of the keyboard AND the palm rest area
cracked.. My mistake, I figured cosmetics were not worth dealing with..
UNTIL they tried to use that against me as Abuse....
wow.. Apple Care took the laptop for a 2nd opinion and fixed all that was wrong.
They about lost a customer with 2 kids in College looking for laptops..

yeah its the bump. I have bumps on both sides in those two spots.
anyways, I took out one of the magnets when I forgot to put it back in. (had to change the LCD). Anyways, don't ask, don't tell.
They gave me a free battery replacement...

My guess is that they use incredibly cheap material in an effort to either save money, the environment, or... money. Really, it's embarrassing how fast they fall apart.

Laura-Alexis H, I agree with the embarrassing part.
Its not really that nice having people look at your nice classy Apple MacBook only to see some ugly gaps in the casing. (Where the plastic has come off because of the cracking)

I think they need to re-formulate the plastic they use so that it is tougher.
