Spoke to an Apple Rep Today who told me...
 |
My macbook that I purchased last Decmeber started cracking also - just like everyone else it's where the tabs are and I've covered it with white electrical tape.
I called Apple today and the man at first told me that he was unaware of this problem happening to any others. I said...'really? If you go to your website at Apple.com you'll find hundreds of threads on the subject!'
When I asked if there was anything I could purchase - an insert or anything - to make sure that this did not happen again he then went on to say that Apple had apparently had a company manufacturing the cases who was using subpar materials. They have recently switched manufacturers and will now have a lifetime gaurentee not to crack. Interesting that he knew so much about a problem he knew nothing about! :0
So, just thought I would share that if anyone's interested.
I do have a question...when they change out the cases do they change out the screens as well or just the keyboard area?

Indeed: beware, because it's not just a small batch of sub-par plastics. I had my MacBook repaired because of this cracking issue in October, and they replaced the whole top case (keyboard, trackpad and all.)
And then I had it repaired again last week, as the brand new replacement top case had started cracking in less than four months. I'm glad I've got Applecare, but I'm sad I'm needed it so often. Laptop cases shouldn't just wear out twice a year...
