Geo API methods for developers soon.
 |
Just a quick heads up. Because all this map stuff is new and groovy we want to keep an eye on the servers to see how they cope with general usage. Once everything has had a chance to settle down and we've tuned it a little we'll release the APIs.
No firm time scales, but the APIs to set/get/remove location will probably be out in the second half of this week. The search API (allowing you to find photos by tag, user, group, data and location) should be out next week, if the servers are looking good.
Essentially what this means is, soon, no more having to slurp down 'geotagged' photos every 5 mins, keeping your own local database and missing all the old ones. We'll handle all that, just ask for the photos where and when you want them. Hopefully freeing you up to get on with the fun stuff.
I'll be doing a more detailed blog post up at geobloggers when I've actually had a chance to breath :) yay, I can start blogging again!
Cheers
Dan

great!
any word about more detailed maps for europe (germany in my case) as the satellite photos are not very usable if you like to place photos exactly.

Glad to know this. I also got an email from Stewart about geo privacy and importing photos.

Nils, I do know, but I'm not allowed to say, which sucks.
There's an update (out of our control) coming which includes far more detailed maps, and "the one true geocoder" apparently :)
But soon.
.CK as soon as I know more details I post here.

Ok, I got the mail from steward and started looking around.
Here are some documentation pages that I found about the API (not yet tested the methods as Dan said we should not take the server down yet :P)
www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.geo.getLocation...
www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.geo.setLocation...
www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.geo.removeLocat...
The search seems to be working with the usual flickr.photos.search where you can provide a bbox value with the format: -180,-90,180,90 (this is for the worldwide map) and an accuracy value (not sure what this is, seems to be between 1 and 17). To get geo information, you have to add extras=geo in the parameters which will return attributes:
latitude longitude accuracy

Mortimer, the 16 "accuracy" levels are now documented on www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.geo.setLocation... as "World level is 1, Country is ~3, Region ~6, City ~11, Street ~16. Current range is 1-16. Defaults to 16 if not specified."

HI, I've turned on the parsing of Exif GPS data (http://www.flickr.com/account/geo/exif) and uploaded an image (http://flickr.com/photos/84381162@N00/228713050/) but on the photo info page it doesn't have the expected 'Map' button, nor the "Photo taken in.." text and on the "Locations" tab when inspecting the image in Organizr's map the location fields are empty.
Is this feature working for anyone else? I'm writing a bunch of little widgets that handle geo-coded images and getting Flickr to read the Exif tags properly is important to me.

@The Intrepid Antipodean, there is another thread about exif import, you might want to try there (or on the help/bug forums)
Anyway, I think that to see the map buttons, you'll also have to go and set the privacy questions first: www.flickr.com/account/geo/privacy

There are some more geo related API docs:
Get permissions for who may view geo data:
flickr.photos.geo.getPerms
Set the permission for who may view the geo data:
flickr.photos.geo.setPerms
Return a list of your geo-tagged photos:
lickr.photos.getWithGeoData
Return a list of your photos which haven't been geo-tagged:
flickr.photos.getWithoutGeoData

@mortimer: It's all sorted now, either I hadn't checked the auto-read-from-exif box or I did and it wasn't working. It's working now though so I can get uploading a bucket load of local pictures and see how they work with my apps.
