About Golden Rectangle

The width to height ratio of a Golden Rectangle is 1:1.618, or 1.618:1, also known as the Golden Ratio or Golden Section. This group is for images that are cropped to a Golden Rectangle and explore the Golden Ratio in their composition.

An Artistic Experiment
This is an experiment in creating artwork from this universal ratio. It concerns the shape of the image or photo, and preferably also the subject.

Golden Rules...
• Images must be Golden Rectangular in shape!
• Maximum 3 pics per day.
• No more than 3 pics by the same person on the group homepage.

Phi
For a Golden Rectangle, one side is approximately 1.61803398874989 ("Phi") times the size of the other...
This is around 61.8% for one side and 38.2% for the other.
The exact ratio can never actually be known because Phi is an irrational number, just like Pi (3.14159...). The number of decimal places goes on infinitely.

An Infinite Pattern
If you were to cut a square from the Golden Rectangle, the remaining small rectangle would have exactly the same height-to-width ratio as the original rectangle...
Only a rectangle with a Golden Ratio has this property. This is the Golden Rectangle.

Golden Ratio in Nature
The Golden Ratio has some fascinating properties and is found everywhere in Nature. It somehow appeals to our aesthetic sense of beauty.
Construction of trees, seashells, human and animal bodies follow this ratio. The ancient Parthenon Temple in Greece was built on these dimensions, as was the Great Pyramid of Egypt.

Cropping an Image to a Golden Rectangle
The long way:
• Determine the desired width or height of your cropped image, in pixels
• Using that length in pixels, calculate either:
length * 1.618 (when the first length is the shorter side), or
length / 1.618 (when the first length is the longer side).

The short way:
• Enter the width or height into the GoldenRectanglizer. This will tell you what the other dimension should be.
A good way to use it is to open it in a new browser window and resize it small. Keep it open whenever you crop your images.

Checking Your Images
To check images that you or others have uploaded to Flickr, click on the "All Sizes" button for that image. The Medium size will be 500 x 309 pixels for a Golden Rectangle.
