the only goldfish we have is dorothy who's a redcap but we also have some fancy guppies, some red goroupe, and some sucker fish.
dorothy definitely has the most personality!

Dorothy looks huge - chubby and pretty! How old is she? I'm planning to set up a pond myself. What could be the problems that I might face? I also own two bettas.

Hi, I have several goldfish, 8 actually.
The elders are two comets : Mordechai aka Mordi (he is pearl white) and Le Cachalot aka le Citron (bright yellow and white), then comes Maximilan, a shubunkin which used to be red, dark blue and white, but now, he is mainly orange/red with two little black lines on the tail.
Recently we adopted 5 more little shubunkins :
- Hippolyte (translucid white, with red and black dots, red upper lip)
- Valentin (half red half white)
- Le Squale (translucid white, with red, yellow and black dots, his lips are black), the smallest.
- Donald & Trump (one is half red, half white, the other is half orange half white but we still haven't decided which is which...)
They get on very well together and make a hell of a turmoil in the tank. They're hungry all the time and put on their little puppy faces whenever they see someone new and naive enough to feed them.
Otherwise, Max is a speed racer, Mordechai holds a degree in fish yoga and love sending kisses at me when I come home.

That is so cute! Oh, so you're more into the classic goldfish as opposed to the fancy ones.
Yeah, my fish too. They're hungry all the time. They're insatiable!
Has anybody had their goldfish eating off their fingers?

No, mine just kiss our hands whenever we want to replace a plant...
Do yours eat your fingers ?

Lol. It should've been "eating food off their fingers". But no, they've never tried eating my fingers. They're sweet.

I have 7 koi and numberous (uncountable) goldfish. Only two of the koi have names that I can remember: Big Red (who is huge!) and Kes (from "Star Trek: Voyager"). I don't know what types they are, but Kes is all gold, and BR is essentially, uh, calico.

We have 4 goldfish.
* Angel was labelled as a premium comet from the petshop.
* Commander Orange is a calico pompom.
* Edna Mode is an orange deformed comet missing a fin, so I guess that makes her a nymph.
* Flash is a fantail that has transformed from a black and tan baby into the only true GOLDfish in our tank.

Hi, I have more goldfish than I can count. I chose regular
goldfish so that they wouldn't eat the water lilies. Started with
8 and after 2 seasons I can't count them all.......:)
The pond is above ground 6' X 12' and contains 1200 gallons
or so

I just love the sound of the water falling from the barrel & the
kisses I get from the fish as I clean the pond... what a joy!

My family had own gold fishs before...when I was a child(red one), I cought them at a small local festival every year.
But unfortunately, cat ate them, and after that I quit to have.
Cat are also cute animal, but they sometimes becomes their enemy .
I had a chance to got cute ranchu from my friends who cought at ponds.
My friend said before he has them as pets, he have never had a interested in them, but after having as a pet, they looked really cute and take care every day even he is too busy.
I wished but didn't have enough capacisty & courage to care ... because we need responsibility for pets. so, I gave up getting the cute babys. One of them are white-ranchu, so I named "snow-white".
They can survive even they don't eat for a long time, but the environmental change cause their death. I guess all you are expert about them!
Anyway, really interesting and cute fish. I want to meet them again.

I'm sure you get a lot of joy from taking care of them!
:::PhOtOs:::, that was very responsible of you not to take care of those fish because you didn't think you could. I wish other people would be like you! Others just flush the fish down the toilet bowl or leave it to die when they lose interest. I'm sure you'll be a good fish mommy someday. :)

I have 9 koi, that have recently produced 11 offspring. Our pond is long and thin and holds about 4000 litres. I much prefer koi than goldfish (had those in the past) as they seem to be more intelligent and have more character.
I have tried to get them to eat peoples fingers, but in training i get freaked out by 9 big koi all slurping around my hand....
Is it true that koi have teeth at the back of their mouth for chewing up their food?

I WISH I knew what kind of fish I had. We inherited the pond with the house, and there are about 40 fish in it, that seem to be a mixture of koi and goldfish. I have no clue what variety, but if you look in my photostream at pics tagged "koi" or "pond" they're there. Don't know if you can identify them by pics. I have one that really fascinates me. It was born last year, and has all the colors of the various other fish, along with a good bit of BLUE. I just added him to the group here yesterday.

Hi, I'm glad I found this group - it seems pretty cool :-)
I have 4 four fancy goldfish. Philip (black moor), Buxton (blue oranda), Eva (orange fantail) and Henry (ranchu).
I've been keeping goldfish for 15 years now (on and off), learning mostly through trial and error, in the days before internet :-) There's so much conflicting advice out there!

I have a few of everything these days it seems. For adults 8 koi, 3 ryukins, 1 black moore, a comet who is all white except for orange rings around his eyes. I also have a plethora of last years babies that I believe are a cross been the white comet and a shubunkin that was picked off by a heron. Right now they are all one big happy family in my pond, but I have hopes of building a second pond before the end of summer and splitting the koi out from the rest of them. My oldest koi is 4 years old now and the size difference is getting to be enough that I think separation would be a good idea. Plus the water lilies would probably appreciate the koi being elsewhere...

I've kept small goldfish in the past. I've kept fantails, moors, comets and common goldfish. But they don't last long.
I had the last one, a calico fantail, for a few months. I only succeeded in keeping the water from getting an algae bloom.
I have no problem keeping other freshwater fish. Goldfish is such a deep mystery for me. It's odd, I could never keep more than one in even 2 gallons.
I enjoy taking pictures of them.
