Please note letters to the board of game is a time sensitive issue as the board of game will meet in March.
Also, writers should be aware, the Board of Game will be a hostile audience to those in support of the bears. The Board approved the hunting of bears in the Kamishak Special use area in meetings in 2005 (slated to begin this year) and the present meeting will consider proposals to restrict hunting in the Katmai Preserve and to stop the past action to allow hunting in the Kamishak area. I believe these proposals were placed on the agenda by agencies who support the idea of watchable wildlife.
One such agency is the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). They have sent a mailer to me asking for letters to the Board of Game. They should be composed to Ron Somerville, Chairman, Alaska Board of GAme, ADF&G Boards Support Section, P.O. Box 115526 Juneau, Ak 99811-5526.
NPCA has asked that such addressed letters be send by mail or e-mail to NPCA-Alaska Region, 750 W 2nd AVE Suite 205, Anchorage Alaska 99501 or jmillen@npca.org and for questions to jmillen@npca.org or 907-277-6722 ext 25. As they plan to attend the meeting.
While I don't have high hopes, the Board of Game approved the hunting in the Kamisak area against a 4 to 1 overwhelming margin of public testimony against opening the hunting last time around. Further, it must be remembered this is the same board that has given us aerial hunting of wolves in spite of two voter approved propositions against aerial hunting. But who knows maybe someday, someone in the state legislature will see that there might be more commerce in watchable wildlife than a few bear rugs.
They will have my letter soon, please add yours.
