This has been discussed a lot in this forum. You will not actually get more data than there was in the original RAW file, so it really doesn't need to be broken down into more exposures. I believe you can tone map a RAW file in photomatix, at least in the version I have. You can do this to achieve the same result, but I have found that I get a better image by opening it up in Camera RAW if you have photoshop CS3 and playing with the sliders. (add fill light, recover some over-exposed highlights, play with curves and saturation.) Also, another tip is to put light smoothing to the max when you are using photomatix to avoid halos between light and dark areas, which tend to look cartoony,
