So how did you discover JPG mag?

Now that we've all deleted our accounts, I think it's time we shared our stories about how we came to discover JPG magazine. I think our stories, coupled with the fact that we each have deleted our individual accounts after having learned of the sudden bad news, will ultimately show how essential Heather and Derek were to JPG and to the greater online community.

I'll start.

My road to JPG was paved by Heather Champ. I first learned of Heather through her wonderful site, mirrorproject. From there I discovered her blog and over the past 7 years or so, often ran into her (or her account) on other online communities, upto and including flickr.

It wasn't until last year that I'd learned of JPG, and when I discovered that it was founded by Heather and her new hubby, Derek, I was in. I knew little of Derek, but from what I've seen, Heather is the type of person who is very committed to fostering communities without exploiting them. I am always wary of publications asking for donated work, but knowing who is (rather, was) behind JPG, I had no qualms joining the community and even spent many wee hours combing through the images and voting for those which I felt deserved publication.

JPG's loss is our gain because I know that this supercouple will move on to bigger and better things.

I am sure someone asked me to wote for an image they had just put up a year or so ago. I saw the site and uploaded a few of my better images. As it was only published in the US I did not really go the whole hog on it. But did look at and post more images when they blocked Flickr in the UAE. Now happily I am back on Flickr and look forward to bigger and better things.

I have been following Derek and Heather online for years, so I remember the first JPG Magazine very well.

I never though my work was good enough to submit and sort of forgot about it.

Then Derek contacted me about one of my photos that he saw here on Flickr, so I made a JPG account and uploaded it. It was eventually published in Issue 7, and it really changed things for me. It made me feel like my photography is worth something and opened a lot of doors for me. I ended up in Issue 9 as well and in the JPG exhibition in Switzerland...blah blah blah. All because of Derek.

I owe Derek so much and for that alone, I couldn't stay there. No way.

The JPG group here, on Flickr, first and foremost, was a really great pool for a long while. I learned about JPG from the pool Derek and Heather ran, submitted, never got accepted, and finally got one in when they did the "JPG 2.0" thing (and lots of even better stuff happened after that). That new website was a fantastic idea, especially when articles were community edited as well, and I stuck around the Flickr pool also because it was a nice pool.

I owe Derek so much and for that alone, I couldn't stay there. No way.

Totally.

fensterbme showed me JPG mag. I set up an account, uploaded a photo, got my first issue and was immediately hooked. The quality of work from so many different walks of life that each issue has is amazing and I find myself combing over old issues all the time. At times, JPGMag has served as an inspiration to better my own work. I'm grateful to Derek and Heather for all that they've done.
