Do you want me to be more selective?
 |
Hi all,
Thanks for posting to the Iki group.
I'm wondering whether I should reject more photos that are seemingly not iki.
I don't want to be picky, and I tend to be soft towards newcomers.
Well, I know that sometimes it is hard to say what iki is and what is not. At the same time, some people don't read the description of the group at all.
The judgment of iki is ultimately subjective. But I'd like to maintain the consistency of the group. As iki is not yet well known, it might be necessary to give you ideas of iki by enforcing selection.
Do you want me to be more selective?
Let me know how you guys think.
Thanks!
Yuji

I would be pleased if you'd be more selective. I know you don't want to discourage submissions. But, honestly, I've been reading up on Iki, and I still have little understanding of what to look for.
I'd be pleased if I could see a long stream of photos all deemed Iki for me to learn from.

Hi,
Thanks for the comment.
No offence and no irony, but please tell me which part of this photo

fits characteristics of iki that I mentioned here.

I took a look at your photos. You take good photos, but to be honest, none of the images are close to iki. I repeat, being not iki is not a shame. It's just that iki is a particular type of beauty among many others.
Here's a small collection of my photos that should have captured iki things.

I admit that this collection is far from enough to enumerate the possibility of iki.
Among recent postings, I find this particularly iki.

Some scenes (Japanese drummers, dancers, kimono etc.) are entitled to iki simply because they are thought be iki traditionally. It doesn't mean ALL Japanese drummers, dancers, kimono etc. are automatically iki.
These are quite iki.

I wasn't suggesting I have any iki photos. I know I don't have any.
But, perhaps this is an example of a westerner just not being able to grasp a foreign concept... but after reading up on iki, and studying the images you've presented... I don't get it. I can see no common element in the pictures you've described as iki.

Hi Just some dust,
If I try to explain iki in a very simple way, see the double side of Superman. Iki is the opposite of yabo. Clark Kent is yabo, and Superman is iki. That doesn't explain all of iki, but at least you get the basic idea.
Iki can be perceived in many different ways, just like the higher notion, beauty. You might want to study examples of classic iki, which are found in traditional Japanese scenes/things. Then you might find more coherent pattern than modern iki. The understanding of modern iki may come after that.
If you don't have access to anything Japanese, you can start with photos of something cool, but in a stylish, mature way. Iki often appears in a delicate balance between determination and eroticism. Find lean figures rather than plump persons.
Your friend, flowerprophet has a good photo.
I would call this iki!

American culture often succeeds in presenting the determination element of iki, but I often see that the rich, "too obvious" side easily falls to yabo.
The essence of iki is inconspicuousness. Iki might appear when someone shows off himself/herself, but in a SUBTLE manner. I know, uppercases are always yabo.

Yes, please straighten up this group. It would give us, or at least me, a better understanding of what Iki is.

Thanks hellobo!
General tips to all:
Most shrines, temples, and castles are NOT iki.
These architecture are located outside of everyday life.
Do not pick travel photos!
Iki is found only in your EVERYDAY LIFE.

Red Horse, you just booted a pic of mine out of the group, and you were absolutely right. Keep it tight then it's more focused and more fun for all.

I think, it's good idea that you give a kind of judgment of "iki" in this group. I should think that most of all pictures here are far from "iki". I understand that it's difficult to find what is "iki", even though too many Japanese misunderstood it with "wabi", "sabi", "miyabi" and what's more "yabo"!
Or how about choose like "Iki of this month"?
Showing more examples with your comments is easier & clearer to the members than just reading explanation, perhaps.
...If you have the time :-)
Anyway thank you for sharing such an interesting group!
