wonder why the aryan clan didn't convert this as their own temple like they did with all the other budhist temple in kerala. in fact most of them were budhist temples.

have read things like these in the book DaVinci code...
btw , i have been to almost all famous hindu temples in kerala and have never seen any buddhist related architecture.

sajiv vijay, there was no Hindu till aRyans came into realm. there was only Dravidians and there was no religion. (not forgetting some brahmins)
Hindus propaganda came in to realm mainly after 8th century mainly) and that was after Srisankara revolutionised the vedas into advaita. till then all of the kerala kings were Bhudhist or Jain.
Most of the Hindu Temple we today didn't belong to hindus, but they took over most of them by force or by might.

കെരളത്തില് നിന്നും കണ്ടെത്തിയ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ബുദ്ധപ്രതിമയുള്ളത് മാവേലിയ്ക്കര. പള്ളിയില് അവസാനിയ്ക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലനാമങ്ങളും പള്ളിക്കൂടവും ശരണംവിളിയുമൊക്കെ ബുദ്ധമതത്തിന്റെ അവശേഷിപ്പുകല്.
ചള്ളിയന് പറയുന്നതുപോലെ.

ദ്രാവിഡ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങള് ബൌദ്ധക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളായി മാറുകയായിരുന്നിരിക്കണം, എന്നാല് ആര്യന്മാര് ബൌദ്ധരെ തുരത്തി അവ കൈക്കലാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. നമ്മള് മിക്കവരും ദ്രാവിഡരല്ലേ? :)

കേരളത്തില് വന്നിട്ടുള്ള മിക്ക സഞ്ചാരികളും ഇവടങ്ങളിലെ രാജാക്കന്മാര് ബുദ്ധമത വിശ്വാസികളാണ് എന്ന് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല് അത് 11 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടീനു ശേഷം അത് ഹിന്ദു മതാമായി മാറുന്ന്നു
ബുദ്ധമതക്കാരുടെ പാലി ഭാഷയില് നിന്ന് ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പദങ്ങള് മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് ആദേശം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് നല്ല്ല തെളിവല്ലേ.
ഉദാ: റാണി, അരചന്, അത്താണി, ഓച്ഛാനം,മോതിരം, ആലവട്ടം, കപ്പം, ചുങ്കം, പട്ടയം, പാളയം, ചമ്മട്ടി, അങ്ങാടി,കൂത്തക, ചന്ത, ചരക്ക്, ചെട്ടി, പീടിക, ഉറുപ്പിക, അങ്ങനെ ലിസ്റ്റ് നീണ്ടതാണ്.
ഓണം, വിഷു, തുടങ്ങി ഒട്ടനവാധി ആഘോഷങ്ങളും മാമാങ്കം പോലൂള്ള പരിപാടികളും ബുദ്ധമതത്തില് നിന്ന് വന്നതല്ലേ.
പള്ളി എന്ന പദവും അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ. മാപ്പിള എന്ന പദവും മാര്ഗം കൂടിയവ്വര് എന്നര്ത്ഥത്തില് (മാര്ഗ്ഗപ്പിള്ള) വന്നതാണ്. പിന്നീട് ഹിന്ദുമതം ഒഴിച്ച് മറ്റേതുമതത്തിലേക്കും ചേരുന്നതിനെ മാപ്പിള എന്ന് വിളിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങി.
ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെ ആചാരങ്ങള് ഒഴിച്ച് ആഘോഷങ്ങള്ക്കെല്ലാം ബൌദ്ധരോടാണ് കടപ്പാട്, ആനച്ചമയം, മൂത്തുക്കുട, ആനയെഴുന്നള്ളത്ത് ഒക്കെ.
അയ്യോഎന്ന വിളി തന്നെ അവരില് നിന്ന് നമുക്ക് ലഭിച്ച പാരമ്പര്യമാണ്. ജാതി മത ഭേദമന്യേ എല്ലാവരും അയ്യോ വിളിക്കൂന്നില്ലേ...

എല്ലാവരും എന്റ്റന്സ് എഴുതി എഞ്ചിനീയര്മാരും ഡോക്റ്റര്മാരുമാകാന് ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുമ്പോള് ചരിത്രം ആരു ശ്രദ്ധിയ്ക്കാന്!
പിന്നെ വല്ല മത്സരപരീക്ഷയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി..അല്ലെങ്കില് ക്വിസ്സ് മത്സരത്തിന് കുറെ നാളുകളും പേരുകളും അറിഞ്ഞാല് മതി.

തെക്കെ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രധാന ബുദ്ധമതകേന്ദ്രമായിരുന്നു മുസ്സിരിസ്സ്. ശങ്കരന് തുടങ്ങിവെച്ച ഹൈന്ദവവല്കരണത്തില് അതും നാശമായി. ബുദ്ധക്ഷേത്രം കണ്ണകീക്ഷേത്ര്മായി മാറ്റപ്പെട്ടു. ബുദ്ധഭിക്ഷുണികളെ ഓടിയ്ക്കാനായി തുടങ്ങിയ തെറിപ്പാട്ട് പിന്നെ ഭരണിപ്പാട്ടായി ആരാധനയുടെ ഭാഗമായി!
ചള്ളിയന്, അറയില് പറയുന്നത് ചരിത്ര സത്യങ്ങള് തന്നെ.

once i was going through an article on buddism in india. and i just searched for buddism in kerala and got to know about this temple. Just curiousness . I was Searching for the pics and couldnt find any. so thought abt looking in flickr. was not able to find it. so i posted it in the community so tat someone close to the area can upload one

Mohan, Budha statues are excavated from many places in the coastal belt of Kerala and there are 4 such statues in Alappuzha Dt- Karumadi, Mavelikara, Bharanikavu and Krishnapuram Palace. This one, recovered from a paddy field near Kandiyoor Mahadeva temple in Mavelikara and dates back to 9th or 10th century. It is in Padmasana, the sitting posture.
Onattukara (of which Mavelikara form a part) was once a flourishing Budhist centre and the place names karunagappally, Karthikappally, Pallickal etc bear their early buddist connection.
This statue is at Budha jn, just 100 mts from the KSRTC bus stand. On the right side is the Krishnaswamy temple and the left road takes you to the Rly Stn.
It is not a temple, but I have seen the Auto drivers in that jn lighting lamps and praying here.
