Gig / music photography with a Lensbaby

I was at a music festival working with a couple of bands, I was managing them but also doing some photographs.

Well the festival had loads of dSLR snappers with various expensive kit and having photographed the guys a bit using my Tamron 28-75 and Canon 55-250, I felt like I needed a new approach.

So out came the Lensbaby and it occured to me that I hadn't seen one being used for live music photography before... and that it could be either really interesting or completely suck...

I think some of them came out OK, what you guys think?

I would like to be more intimate (closer) with the subjects. Maybe time for a telephoto attachment?

Good luck!!

Well I think their wives might have something to say about you wanting to get intimate with them! :)
Sorry couldn't resist.

Until I joined this group I hadn't seen the tele-converter for the Lensbaby... I shall investigate. It's my birthday soon so it might be going top of the list!!

Is it just a 1.6 converter available or more? and is this the one:

I shall look into it.

I don't really recommend the converters: the quality isn't great and it makes focusing even harder. Just get closer: the lensbaby on a crop sensor is not very wide so you don't have to be in anyone's face to fill the frame:

Cellists are always the hottest musicians (apart from when I was a cellist... l kinda let the side down!).

Great photo. What f-stop are you on there?

Alals getting in their face isn't always an option or indeed appropriate (as in the case of mine).

I've had a go at this recently too. I reckon the effect is usually best if it's done minimally, but I tend to work with f/2.8 and f/4.0 to let as much light in as possible, so minimal effects are tricky.
