a warning for gig photographers

My friends discovered that someone has been taking their gig photos and selling them on eBay, claiming the copyright for himself. Since I know a lot of people 'round these parts take gig photos, I figure this is a good place to draw attention to it:
www.flickr.com/photos/nugatory/2361014962/in/set-72157604...

[edit to say that the link goes to my friend's photo]

My friend says she thinks his eBay account was frozen, but Flickr have just shrugged it off (I guess there isn't really very much that they can do to prevent it)

Anyway, I just thought people should have a heads up. And those of you who actually use eBay should make some complaints to them!

that's really messed up. how did your friend find out? i think the best thing to do is change the settings on your photos. don't let other people download them and have the largest size a lot smaller. i don't upload my full size images. usually 700 width max and 72 res.

if you go to account> privacy & permissions
you can change who can download your photos, if you select "only you" or "friends & family" it means other people wont even be able to do the old right click save as, the best they would be able to manage would be a screen shot, which is now way near good enough quality to print/sell etc..

I complained to Flickr they just told my to resize my photos, I have had to resort to watermarking them which in my opinion spoils the shot for the majority of honest flickr users out there.
It's ebayers like willypenc who should be stopped
I also looked at his feed back and emailed all of the people who bought my pictures telling them they had bought stolen goods.

Language, Language! That is indeed the most ridiculous watermark I've ever seen on Flickr. Resizing the photos and maybe adding a discreet watermark should be plenty enough to stop people re-selling your photos.

PicMarkr picmarkr.com/ is quite useful, it allows you to resize your photos and at the same time add your Flickr link discreetly to each photo.

Good people can photoshop off a watermark unless it is highly obtrusive

If your taking photos at the O2 to sell then you should have the permission of the arena.

Oi, leave the flame war out of this! I was only drawing peoples' attention to it to help, in case they might have gig pictures being sold on eBay as well.

I made the watermark as big in order to stop people like willypenc ripping them off again, if you were to look at my other photos you will see how I normally present them. I didn't have permission but took one of my cameras in anyway, but as it happens security asked me to stop taking photos before the break in the gig. The security manager was very pleasant and told me that if i stopped taking pictures he would not ask me to wipe the memory card, this is obviously the reason why SLR's and telephoto lenses are not allowed into the arena. I originally presented the images without the watermark but with the caveat that they should not be copied and that they were for enjoyment only, a little, although some might say very naive of me but there you are. I have looked at willypenc's ebay site and have found almost all of his photo's have been ripped from Flickr , I have also taken the time to e-mail the photographers concerned that their photos are for sale and that they should make a complaint to ebay.

I wouldn't downsize your photos nor watermark them... Such measures only take away other people's enjoyment of your photographs... If someone tries to make money off your photos - do what you can to confront them / report them... But I don't think you should try to fight the thieves by restricting the photo viewing experience for everyone...

Try to take it as a compliment and shrug it off... That's what a lot of musicians are doing...
