One Year Warranty
 |
So my one year warranty is coming up on my MacBook in two weeks. I was wondering if there was anything on it that I should check now while I still have a warranty. I'd obviously rather get it taken care of now rather than later. So any advice anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I would strongly consider buying the AppleCare before the warranty is up. If you are a student or teacher you get a discount. My friend just had her hard drive fail after about 1 year. It is worth it. I have it on my 3 computers.

AppleCare FTW! Seriously, it's on every Apple device we have, just in case... too important.

Yeah, AppleCare and AppleCare alone. When my parents bought my iBook G4 in 2004, the Micro Center guys tricked them into getting a Micro Center warranty instead of AppleCare. They might as well have not bought a warranty because the customer service is terrible. I have AppleCare on my new iMac, and am planning on getting it for my iPod and iPhone soon.

But do you all who have AppleCare actually ever use it? I feel like I'd be paying $300 for no reason whatsoever. I've knock on wood never really had any computer problems. If you never have an issue you are essentially just dropping a couple hundred to just feel more secure. Not knocking it. I guess I just need to hear some more convincing, haha.

Well, here are the problems I had with my iBook after the original warranty ended:
Logic board failure
Busted combo drive
Ant infestation (not supposed to be covered, but MicroCenter fixed it anyways)
Video card malfunction
Logic board failure (second time)
Bad backlight
Several minor things
All told, I guess my computer has spent about 5 months in the shop. If I had AppleCare, it would have been in the shop for about 2 weeks total. If I had no warranty, it probably would have cost upwards of $1200 total.
Bottom line: Get AppleCare
You can just assume nothing will happen, but when your computer needs serious work, you will be sorry.

Yup, the iMac will be going in soon for a noisy drive, but it's still functional. Applecare was only $129 I believe for this iMac, and at $60/year... I'll pay that for a "just in case".
The portables are (obviously) more prone to issues, being carted around., so hence the bigger price. I know when the Powerbook kicks the bucket (5 years and going), the new MBP will have Apple Care day one (er.. year two).
It's all piece of mind I guess.

My 1st Mac I didn't get Apple care because its a desktop and I wasn't going to be transporting it from place to place. But for my Powerbook I spent the extra money because I would be travelling with it. I figure why not? Cost for PB $1800 Apple Care $250.
I didn't want to spend another $2k for another computer within a year. Once I did something to my PB, took it into the store and they fixed it. So far I've racked up about $1400 in repairs. When I get another desktop, I wiill get APple care and when I get another MBP too.

Ok thanks. I guess it's something I'll look into then. I guess since I've never had a problem computer-wise, I just hate spending money on preventative stuff. But this is also my first laptop/notebook, so it might be a good investment.
