Advice on new mac

Vintage Emulsion says:

Hi. Im having an equipment overhaul over the next few months. Im replacing the Fujitsu Lifebook with an Asus EEEPC (The 7 inch one, 4G, Linux obviously) and Im thinking of replacing my fairly recently acquired (for £5!) Powermac G3 Blue&White. Also, the old Casio CTK synth is getting replaced by a Novation XioSynth 49 or 25.

The G3 is running OS8.5, and is a bit useless really. I was thinking of getting OSX for it (but the apple store refused to sell me jaguar) and some ram to run OSX (a bit pointless as I dont have discs) and a flat screen (the crt means my already cramped desk is now some kind of elaborate monitor stand) so ive decided I may have to get rid.

A certain eMac has caught my eye. Its a revision 2 with an 800mhz G4, 640MB ram, 40GB hd, Airport Wireless card, OSX Panther, original keyboard and mouse and a 3 month warranty. Its £135, or £99 without the airport card (but I doubt I can find a mac compatible wireless USB dongle for less than £35.

Is this any good for a new main mac, or even main machine to complement my EEE for next few years?

Id mainly be doing light video editing, heavy photo editing and web design. And college/uni work too (programming, writing etc...). Also, music recording (I have DSP Quatrro and Muzys which work on macs, so Im sorted with the software int hat department. And I may buy a copy of iLife for Garageband.)

Any advice on the Mac front? I respect the advice of the members here, and I know many are experienced Apple users.

Thanks in advance.

I imagine if your budget is 135, you could get a mac mini for almost the same price off of ebay. If you plan on doing heavy photo editing, that machine you suggest may not be adequate.

Why not get a Macbook instead of the EEE and the eMac? You can run linux on the Macbook if you so desire.

Nah, Mac Minis are way over my price range. Theyre going for 200 up. Im getting the eee for its portability and the tinkering ability, and I dont like leopard.
Photo editing should be adequate.
I dont see why mac users think their machines dont lose value. The top of the range Mac Pro from a year ago is now about 2/3 the price it is this year. Maybe less. And thats new from apple. A used one should lose far more value. For a 2 year old used mac mini, I expect to pay less than 100.

A quicksilver slipped out of my grasp for 50 quid with tiger, an 18inch lcd and other things. Thats an acceptable price. it sold fast though unfortunatly.

Thanks for the advice
