OT: iPhone vs. Epson P-4000

I've always thought Apple never fails to outdo itself. A perfect example is the iPhone.

Imagine the iPhone being used as the Epson P-4000.

*please excuse my html skill or lack thereof. =D

A device used to store your images during shoots (weddings perhaps) and conviniently show them to friends before the night ends. It would be also cool to hook up your iPhone to an overhead projector and have an instant slideshow of the day's events. Now that would be pushing the envelope for the iPhone.

Would this even be possible with today's available accesories? Would you recommend doing it (vs. risk of data loss, etc.).

I appreciate your input guys; I'm trying to determine if i could go with just the 8Gb model. Thank you very much.

One's a phone.
The other is a mass media storage device.

I don't see the confusion.

Actually, there's no confusion; things are beyond obvious.

I threw in a question if an iPhone can be used as a "mass media storage device" with the intent of freeing your CF card space during a shoot, instant preview and as a bonus use an overhead projector to view your stored images.

Thanks potato.

Project 7:
I am almost certain it would be a possibility. The iPod has a dock (port). The iPhone has a dock (port). I have a little device (made by apple) it is about 2 inches by 2 inches which plugs into the docking port on my iPod and allows a USB cable to plug into the other end. That way I can hook my D80 directly up to my iPod and off-load my CF card that way. THIS SUCKS BATTERY POWER! So, for your situation, substitute my D80 for your projector and I would think it is a possibility.

The only issue is if there is software to support what you want to do. I do not know if there is or isn't but, I bet it is on its way; as Apple has (or is going to) open up the iPhone's OSX to 3rd party developers.

Long story short. If it is not possible today it may be in the very near future. And technically, it is not just a phone. Just like the iPod is not just a music player. For example, I keep a "slimmed-down-version" of my boot disc (hard drive & OSX) on my iPod and have used it (the iPod) to boot my Mac (for trouble shooting).

Later.

Most dock connector transfer cables for cameras are SLOW.
Also, most iPhones really don't store that much data. For a storage device, you normally want at least 100GB+, otherwise, it's normally cheeper to buy a few new CF cards. The fastest hard drive/card-reader device i've seen can copy 1GB per min, most others are much slower. So all in all, It sounds remotely possible, but I doubt it would really be a great timesaver for photographers.

There is that nice screen though...

Apple's interface to its pictures is great. And if you watched the developer conference for the new dev tools.

Also, maybe I can justify an iphone to the boss then (my wife!)
