Quick iTunes migration question...

I just got my new iMac a couple weeks ago and I got all of my photo stuff transferred from my old mac and set up just right...now I'm moving on to iTunes.

All of my music and my old iTunes library xml files are on an external firewire drive just waiting to be used with the new iMac. What is the best way to bring all of that stuff over? I'd like to just keep all of my music on that drive and use it as my iTunes drive. So, I'm assuming that all I'd need to do is go into Preferences and tell iTunes to look in the folder on the external.

My main concern is that on my old G4 I was still using iTunes 6 because my machine was too slow to handle itunes 7 when it first came out. So, the Library files and xml files and all that are still iTunes 6 files. Is this going to matter?? Or, will iTunes 8 recognize the old file and upgrade it to a shiny new iTunes 8 library file?

I think it's not a problem to migrate from iTunes 6 to 7.
The library file is just .xml.
Start iTunes with the pressed 'alt'-button and select your lib.
edit: - the one on the external drive.
(in most cases 'iTunes Library')

cool. Sounds easy enough. I just realized though, my old iTunes xml file is still on my old mac. So, I'll have to copy it off onto the external with all of the mp3s. Then, "alt" launch iTunes, point it toward the external and voila...right? Are there any other files from my old iTunes folder that I'll need to transfer over to the external as well?

Honestly, I'm a bit torn. There's a part of me that likes the clean, fresh, empty iTunes library that I have going on right now. I almost wouldn't mind creating a new, empty library on my external and then only importing select albums, etc. into the new one...but without my old xml file, i'd lose all of my ratings, tags, etc...

hmmm...
