view profile

Tracy777  Pro User  says:

Someone is selling a MacBook Pro 17' 2.16gGhz for $600.Apparently its only 2 months old and has 3 yr warrenty.
What should I look for and ask?

I dont like buying second hand computers, BUT being that its only 2 months old, it cant be in bad shape!
I have an ibook G4 but the price is too good to pass up.
TIA:-)

2.16GHz would be the first-generation 17" MBP. Instead of 2 months old, it's probably 2 years old, be aware of issues with original Intel Macs (like the screen only supporting thousands instead of millions of colors on some units). Also there are RAM limitations (2GB max) and the processor is a 32-bit one. That said, the price is right so go for it...

And like many things that are "too good to be true..."

A 2 month old MBP for $600 would fall under the "what's wrong with it?" category.

I would definitely be asking some serious questions.

Call me suspicious, but that's too cheap to be true. There's a catch, what does the warranty checker say?

This link will take you straight into the Apple warranty checker:

If it has Applecare go for it.

PS - be sure to have everything working in your hands before handing over cash.

Hi Tracy, If you get the serial number from him, you can confirm the Applecare using the warranty checker link further up this thread. Otherwise, take it online when you test it and get the serial off the machine and do it there and then.

Good luck, hope you score a bargain!

Compare the prices these are going for on eBay. I suspect that it may be stolen at this cheap price. If the seller is genuine, you are getting a bargain at the expense of the unfortunate seller.

I always get suspicious at the idea that someone needs money urgently, so they'll sell something cheap. When I need money, I need MORE of it, not less.

That's cheap even for a two-year-old laptop. I sure wouldn't let my Powerbook go for that.
