I say refurb.
I have two refurb MacBooks, both arrived in brand new, untouched condition. One of them even had extra ram in it.

You get the same product with the same warranty. only thing is that it comes in a brown box vs the nice Apple box.

I'm planning on buying a refurbished MacBook Pro soon. I have never bought a refurb before, but it does seem like a really good deal and everybody I know who have bought one are very satisfied.
The main difference appears to be the brown box vs. the fancy Apple box, and I toss out the box anyway.

another vote for refurb. i bought my mb refurbished and its been working beautifully. you're paying 300$ for the pretty box when you get it new, save that so you can use that $$ for accessories! :)

refurb. my 24" imac is refurb and indeed: the only difference was the brown box.

and upgrade your memory through here

$78 for 4gb. (better than the $230 for 4gb a year ago, and the $330 I paid for 2gb a year before that!)

my personal mbp was new I paid in cash in the local apple store was my first "new" mac. in retrospect I should have been patient and ordered a refurb.

the 24" imac I have at work is a refurb. the brown box is actually nice--not sure where you live, but i'm cool with a non-descript box that doesn't scream rob me.

*use the extra $ to buy ram

If you get a refurb, do you get updated software? (iPhoto, iCal, iMovie, etc.)?

You get the software originally sold with the machine, although afaik all refurbs have Leopard. Just to add, I've owned 4 refurbs so far (Powermac, Mac Pro and 2xMBP) and have been as happy as larry with all of them, not a single problem. I also saved in the region of 38% on average.

I bought a refurb MBP not too long ago - love it! Saved a decent amount of cash and only missed out on the prettier box (that still would end up in the garbage either way)

I paid £899 for my MBP as a refurb, and saved myself £300+ at the time. Go for refurb.
