Is Maman in the right setting in Paris?
 |
I came across a photo of our favourite spider in her new setting in Paris. The owner of the photo said:
For me it wrecks the serenity of the otherwise beautiful gardens, being fairly scary to look at and speaking as it intentionally does of pain and torment.
What do others think?
Personally I see her as more of a protective mother rather than one who speaks of pain and torment. Even so I'm not sure she mixes well with the other works around her there.

(note - this is not the photo that goes with the quote)

It does look a little incongruous. I saw the sculpture recently on a visit to Paris. However, I am glad I saw it and I suppose they couldn't stick it in front of the Louvre as there's not much space in front of the pyramid. The sculpture is at one end of the park, off to one side, out of the way, so it didn't come over to me as wrecking the serenity of the gardens. It's a matter of personal taste I suppose.

I thought if fitted in nicely. With all the hustle and bustle of cars on the nearby roads and tourists wandering through the gardens I wouldn't have thought the gardens were a particularly quiet spot anyway (admittedly they are serene compared to the surrounding city, but its not the same as the Trois Pignon!).

There was an exhibition of Louise Bourgeois in Centre Pompidou sometimes ago and I saw two Maman overthere: one at the entrance and the other inside the exhibition in mother's bedroom. I was very impressed by the big spider blocked in a too small space, who left the half-light. It was the first time I saw it and I was a bit worrying ! But I like the way in which Louise Bourgeois explains her choice. It's very fascinating ...
