Good Alberta Camera stores
 |
I'd like to get a camera upgrade in the next year or so, and I was wondering where you Albertans recommend going. I am in Edmonton.
Also, what kind of camera do you recommend?

It all depends, Bear. Are you considering really upgrading, or just replacing what you have with a unit with more megapixels and a more powerful zoom?
If you are just replacing what you already have, even a place like London Drugs or Future Shop will do fine. If you are wanting to get into a more serious camera, then you will need a more serious camera store. A lot of your choice will depend on what kinds of photography you like to do, and of course, budget!
I live in Calgary and have my favourites around here, so I likely won't be of much help to you in Edmonton. But there are some good photography shops in Edmonton. There was one I used to check prices at(on-line) all the time a few years back, but unfortunately, it's name has slipped my mind.
Have a look in your yellow pages and venture into a few of the bigger stores. You'll get a feel as to how well you are helped and and idea of what you might have to spend, depending on your preferences. Keep all options open, within your budget, and perhaps even consider breaking the budget a little. Sometimes a few more bucks buys a whole lot more quality :)
Have fun!

Homie Bear,
I am in Calgary as well and I would recommend the following shops:
www.thecamerastore.com
www.vistek.ca
Both have stores in Calgary.
You may also want to check Henrys at: www.henrys.com
They do not have stores in Alberta as far as I know but they will ship you whatever you buy.
There's also www.cameracanada.com/ but I have no buying experience with them.
As per camera to buy, I guess it's a matter of what you want to do and how much money you want to spend. I have a Canon 20D and love it. Totally recommend.

Thanks for your answers- I have started to peek into places like McBain's and stuff.
I think I want to get a digital SLR, maybe the best I can get for a thousand bucks, in the next year. Getting married right away so that is the financial priority for now though.

That's the place I was trying to remember, McBain's. Thank you.
Might be pretty hard to get a DSLR for a thousand bucks, even in a year. The Canon digital rebel with their kit lens is around that range, but I wouldn't want you to buy the kit, because the bundled lens absolutely sucks on that camera! If you like the Canon offering, then opt for a different lens, but be advised your budget just took a bigger hit.
The Nikon D70 with the kit lens is vastly superior glass. In a year's time, you won't find a D70, maybe not even in a month or so from now. The D50 and D70S are both the new cameras in Nikon's line. The D70S currently sells for around $1500, lens included.
The thing is to hold the various choices in your hands, and get a feel for what feels good to you. Look through it and play around with the controls. 'Cause if the ergonomics aren't right, then chances are you'll take a long time getting comfortable with your new instrument of creativity. And if you are paying that kind of money, not only should it take good images, it had better feel good, too.

Thanks again for replying- these arte things that are good to know. I guess budget isn't really a problem, I just wait a little longer. And you;re right- ergonomics is an important consideration.

Hi there,
Everything they all said for sure. I buy all my cameras from McBain here in Edmonton but be sure and go to the main store (10805 107 ave), the guys there are really wonderful and have solid knowledge. I would go in a few times and ask lots of questions and hold different ones and try them out. It is a big purchase and you want to be sure you have something that feels right.
Congrats on the upcoming marriage too : )
