Microsoft isn't concerned with Flickr
 |
It might be a long time after a takeover of Yahoo before Microsoft even notices Flickr exists. Microsoft is buying Yahoo primarily to get access to advertising revenue, so it will be second in online advertising after Google. I've met Bill Gates, and I honestly believe he is interested in the adoption of powerful software by individuals to transform their lives at home and at work -- but Microsoft is a big company, and big companies always chase the money, and right now all these companies are entranced by the revenues from online advertising. Google isn't really an Internet search company, it's an online advertising company.
Advertising really bugs me -- We all pay for it on television through the products we buy -- and it is irritating that advertising is turning out to have such a big role to play in the growth of the Internet.
Actually, as someone said in another thread, some of the experimental Microsoft Live tools are pretty interesting. And Microsoft is also excited about the potential for the kind of social networking that happens here. Perhaps they could add more power and excitement to Flickr. I just hope they don't make it messy, ugly and hard to use. The design now is excellent.

1. Microsoft is also not concerned with the Flickr users.
3. If Bill Gates is so interested in the adoption of powerful software by individuals, why doesn't he go and turn Windows Vista into powerful, innovative software?
2. Everything they have ever made is messy, ugly and hard to use.

Bill Gates' main interest is MONEY! He is concerned with making more and more money. He releases software that should have been tested more and since he doesn't, we the consumer go through years of patches and updates. Before you know it the next version is released and the fix-it process starts all over again. In the meantime the previous version are not longer supported. Yet after the support stops on MS's software the price to buy that software doesn't go down in price.
I sure hope MS doesn't make a mess of Flickr, oh and I'm sure he knows all about Flickr, the pro accounts are paid accounts. That's more dollars. MS will mess it up with so called improvements and charge more money.
At one time I had a great deal of respect for Bill Gates, can't make the same statement now, and I'm sure he could care less.

Microsoft mixes in proprietary code on the web. M$ does not believe in open standards, regardless of lip service. If their hostile takeover succeeds, then I as a Mac user expect to see the day that Flickr no longer cooperate with my OS or my browser, just as MSN's pages and content do not play nice now, as it is!

All your comments hit the nail very firmly on the head - especially yours "rickm FL". I dumped as much as possible of anything associated with Microsoft about 9 years ago and moved firmly into the Mac camp, because, apart from being a very beautiful and slick operating system and really 'to-die-for' hardware in Macintosh - I just couldn't tolerate the waste created by Microsoft through their inefficiencies in their products - and my levels of frustration reached saturation point. I get great pleasure using Flickr - but if Yahoo! becomes enveloped by MS, and all the potential nastiness that could create - then I'm more than happy to cut out and find pastures new.
