I've been waiting for this book to come for a while ever since I saw a similar book done in Cincinnati. If nothing else, it was the best coffee table book I had seen of Cincinnati as every single photo included in the book was excellent. This book will be the same way, I just hope I can get a photo included this time. :)

It definitely sounds like a cool book worth participating in. From what I've seen from the Capture Cincinnati project, it looks like that was a success. So much so that they are now making a 2nd one. Anyways, good luck, Brent. Looking forward to seeing and voting for everyone's work on the site. :-)

so crashmattb - stupid question 1 of ###:
Green box just means that say of the 11 votes, 6 or more were positive?
Also not being one to read instructions and i run with scissors, let me stress the detail description dealeo which I missed when I first uploaded some pics....I was just using the same title text for the description. I'll be more descriptive now.

Hey Harry. I've already voted for a few of yours. Nice work as always. As for the green box, I'm really not sure. The only green box I know of is on my profile page, and it just counts the percentage of votes I've done for the CMC project. I'm only at 15% so far. And the descriptions of mine need to be revised, added or changed as well. I never knew I was going to be spending so much time with this, but it's fun all the same. Makes me want to be a better photographer, that's for sure! :-)

Click on ME (between UPLOAD and LOGOUT)
Your Photos - sort by votes tab
On the top left corner there is a small green or red box with the up and down arrows and I assume number of votes within the box to the right of the arrows.
Guess what confuses me is the color changes from time to time on a certain picture.

Hey folks! I'm the admin at Capture Music City and thought I'd hop in and answer the green box question.
But first, thanks to Matt for jumping in and being the admin of the Nashville Flickr Users group on Capture Music City. Flickr has such talented photographers. I'm excited to see what this group can add to the project. Already the stuff you folks have submitted has been great!
On to the green box! We actually talk about it in the FAQ, but nobody ever reads those because... well they're just so boring. Basically, it's just an indicator of which photos people are into right now. If folks are viewing, commenting, voting "Dig it" and so on, your photo will be marked green. LightStamp is right, it changes from time to time (and even frequently). So think of it as a quick snapshot of hot photos now. To get a better idea of your best photos over the course of the entire project (without accounting for time or recent activity), take a look at the top three photos pane in your user profile page .
I'll keep checking this thread and do my best to answer any questions. Thanks to everyone who's jumped on board!

The interface is somewhat different......for instance when I go to me, a picture is among the three best liked photos whereas in the thumbnails below it's marked with a red square in the top left corner of the thumbnail. So I'm think something is not syncing here but it's not my site. ;-)
Denise I'll take a look and see if I can figure out what I did to join....

try this: go to capturemusiccity.com/user/profile after you're logged in and select the groups tab.....I've got a Leave Group button which maybe is a join group button if you've not joined yet. Jest something to try. Matt will chime in here with the definite solution.

Interesting idea. Looks like a lot of fun and could be a very creative endeavor. However, the synic side of me has some questions. At the risk of sounding like a killjoy I'll present my skeptical side for you to digest.
This is all going towards making a product. A product that will be sold for a profit. Who is making the profit? The Tennessean? The publisher? Both? Doesn't look like anyone submiting the photos is going to make anything other than the big promise of being able to say "you were published".
That seems to be a popular catch these days with the advent of digital photography and the proliferation of photo-sharing sites. Companies and people cull these sites looking for a way to get top notch photography for nothing. While this project doesn't seem to be one, a lot of projects and contests get people to sign up and in the fine print are giving away all rights to their photos. This project doesn't take the rights but what else is being offered? I understand it's an opt in deal and I don't have to sign up or buy a book. But what gain is there for the photographer, since there is someone making a profit?
Am I being too synical?

Been there too Titanfan. I no longer really contribute to Stock sites like I use to cause these are total rip-offs. But this book will provide an introduction at least on the fine arts side to my work for a lot of people that would never see my work otherwise. The credit and hopefully link to my pro site should be worth something. And it's got the advantage of promotion that I don't have access to at this time.
I also feel a sappy sense of community here. I love my city and I love photography. I figure if I retain rights to the photos, it's all cool.

I can understand the need for exposure but there are lots of ways to achieve that. I also have those same loves of community and photography but the fact is this is all about someone making a profit off of people's photos. Now if they said all or portions of all profits will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or the Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital or some other charity then that would be different. But this is someone's idea of how to make money off of other people with the promise of getting exposure. Probably not getting rich, but enough to get the Tennessean involved. I'm just trying to decide if that's ok with me enough to get in.

Glad you got it worked out, Denise. Welcome aboard!
Mike, I see your point and was hesitant a little at first for similar reasons. I thought to myself, "why should I post some of my better shots to this site instead of trying to make a profit from them myself?" Um, then I quickly realized that I am just an amateur photographer whose work is really only as good as the next person's. Honestly, I'm just a noob with a camera, haha! With the digital age upon us, it seems like anyone and everyone has at least a few photographs worthy of praise and kudos. Only 10-15 minutes surfing Flickr is enough to convince me how much I still have to learn and grow as a photographer.
So, why should I participate? To me, this opportunity that the Capture Music City Project is presenting to all of us is less about the money, and more about the common bond we all will share when this book is eventually published. Call me sentimental, but I think this will be something we all can be proud of as it circulates the Middle Tennessee area. This is why I choose to participate, but every person will look at this project in their own way.
As for you, Mike, you're a great photographer and I know you could greatly contribute to this fun little project for Nashville. Of course, I understand your reasons if you choose not to. Either way, you're on my contacts list so at least I get to see your work. Haha!
Thanks!

Thanks Matt for you comment about my photos. I appreciate that, but I know I'm no Ansel Adams. But consider the photographer that has invested their time and gotten a four year degree in photography and are trying to make a living from it. Say some local photog has a two year project they've been putting together in hopes of putting out a book. Now I'm not at the skill level to think I can go out and shoot Nashville and compete with that person photo for photo. But you take my best shot and your best shot and a hundred other peoples best shots and at no cost they've assembled a book that essentially puts that photographer out of business. This person goes to a publisher with photos that may still put this book to shame and the publisher turns them down since it's already been done and done cheaper than they can sell that book for.
It's helping to destroy an industry. Walmartizing the profession. If photography is something I love how can I justify that? Anyone that has aspirations of making it as a photographer is shooting themselves in the foot. Ok, one book isn't going to do that but it contributes to it.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to go on like this but I thought that a point of view needed to be out there. Not to just looking at it as "I'm just an amateur photographer whose work is really only as good as the next person's". Combined there can be some real good photos put together from this group. Were those produced for free? This book isn't going to be given away for free. The profits are going into someone's pocket. Do you think there is no value in what you do? Submitting photos to projects like this certainly cheapens it.

Doesn't cheapen my work one bit. Glad to get the promotion value out of the deal. And it hardly sinks to a Wal-Mart type situation in my opinion.
But no I see this as an opportunity, a plus. And I don't think it's gonna put any photographers out of business. Understand where you're coming from but I don't think it's a big rip off at this point.

Hey folks. Interesting discussion developing on the concept of the project. Perhaps I should weigh in... but not right now. We're having some database issues. One of our databases got corrupted and we are restoring from a backup. Soon, everything should be back to normal but I wanted to be sure and give you a heads up so you don't feel stranded.

Keep up the good work, fetopher!
Mike, all I can say is that you've got many points in your discussion that I could definitely agree with. However, the cup half full view says that this project is more about providing an opportunity for us local casual photographers to gain some pride in being able to share photos of our city, Nashville in a published book. How many opportunities does the casual photographer get to actually have his/her work published? This is my first, and probably the same for many other participants.
And I really do not see this collaboration cheapening the photography profession. If anything, it's pushing the profession further into everyday discussion. And although I hate to say it, if a pro photographer is in danger of losing his/her job because of this one project then maybe he/she should already look for other work. That is because the competition in the photographic world is increasingly on the rise. Hey, I'm an experienced designer, but if I did not continue to push myself to learn new skills then my job would also be in jeopardy. It's a dog eat cat world! :-)
Hopefully, many of you will choose to share your photos in this project because we have many incredibly talented photographers in the Nashville metro area. And kudos to those who have already joined. Great work, everyone.

Oh, and for the scope of the project, we're trying to limit it to about a hundred mile radius from Nashville. That's pretty broad, obviously, but so far the voters seem to be nixing photos that are further away from Nashville... which is good.

i'm having some concern with the voting process. the calculator bar says i've voted for 100% of the images. realizing that uploads are on-going (and my voting as well), when i visit a random person's profile immediately after seeing the 100% bar, there are images that have been uploaded for quite some time that i have not voted on. i can select the images individually and then place my vote. i'm immediately taken back to the home page stating that i've reached the end of the project, but I know there are several more images that i haven't voted on. i can hit the back button a couple of times to get back to that person's profile, select another image i know i haven't voted on, vote, and then the process starts all over...
any advice?!?

@karansimpson: What you are probably noticing is photos that are no longer a part of the random vote flow. You can read more about it here: capturemusiccity.com/about/faq#flow
@Lightstamp: We're trying to find dupes. When we do, we disable them.
@crashmattb: Groups are exclusive because of the competition to get in the book. The most active group gets their name and website mentioned in the book. Since a user's stats count towards a groups activity, it wouldnt make sense to have the user be a part of two groups. So yes, we are forcing users to decide which group they'd like to help (by adding in their stats). We're thinking of changing the criteria from most active (which is kind of vague) to total aggregate score of all members' photos. That way instead of encouraging mass uploads or mass voting, we're encouraging good uploads. I dunno... something to think about.

The race for the top contributor has gotten a little silly imho. 10 pictures of the same subject - some obvious dups is ridiculous to me. I surely hope I don't have to wade through all of these to vote.
I'm all for all contributing but uploading to play the numbers game hurts all of us in my opinion.
Is it just me or anyone else noticed this?
It's still a fun competition. Other than this there are others that have some great shots out there. Excited to see the book in final form.

Hey Harry. Personally, I try to post my best unless there is something unique about the photo that would be beneficial to the book. As for being the top contributor, I've always lived by the idea of "Quality Over Quantity." I do think there are some people who post anything and everything (and sometimes almost identical duplicates), but honestly there is little that can be done. I guess my disappointment is much like your's, Harry, in that I have to wade through a lot of "not-so-great" stuff to find that truly great photo. I spent almost two hours voting about a week ago to reach the 74% voted mark....only to see that dwindle back down to less than 50% now. Sure, it's not all because of photo dumping because we have a lot of contributors and there are some really great photos showing up. And it's hard to turn anyone away since this is ultimately all in fun. Regardless of whether any of you are an amateur or professional, I think everyone will be able to contribute to this book in the end, and that makes it really special.

I just vote Nix it and hope others won't have to weed through them later. I've been voting on and off for the past two days and I can't get better than 97% complete. It is ok though. It is like a treasure hunt, weed through the dups and then find a gem...it all works out in the end.

hehee...i know the exact pic he is referring to, though I don't remember what it said right now. I don't know. I'm not going to be too critical over what people post. I know I'm certainly not the greatest photog in the world. I'm sure some have looked at some of the pics I've posted and been like wtf? I shall just reserve my right to vote in private and let the masses work everything out. If there is such masses. I think the voting has slown a lot right now.

Well, if anyone is feeling as overwhelmed with trying to keep up with the voting like me then I can understand why it's slowed down a bit. I actually spent another hour and a half voting on Sunday and I'm still under 50% voted. Glad to see the participation, but I'm a bit disappointed in some participants posting more than 500-700 photos. Lets be honest here people, do any of you really have that many photos worthy of attention? I don't. To date I have 97 photos posted...and overall I think that's a bit much. I don't want to discourage anyone from taking part in this fun little project. I just maybe ask for a little personal artistic discretion before posting dozens of photos that really do not have a single representation of this city or its citizens.
Alright, 45 days left in the project....now get back to voting!!!! :-)

When I first signed up it took me roughly 4 days of heavy voting to get to 100%. I can hardly stay above 90%. I've gone one day without voting and I'm down to like 95%...lol. I do sometimes wonder what is going through some folks head, but it is what it is like LightStamp said. I figure by the time I get back to voting after the 4th I will be around 80%.

I think we are all feeling the slight disappointment in the planning that went into this...lol
I was a little bothered when I would send someone to one of my pictures by link..that automatically after voting it "randomly" sends you to someone else's photo to keep it "fair" Here's the slight problem...if someone loads a ton of pictures you can make it as random as you want the fact that his odds go up take out the randomness doesn't it?
I dont know if you guys have noticed it but Ive recently come across the same guys name in probably 3 out of 5 photos when I go vote...a little discouraging...
Just my rant for the day..lol

I have seen enough flower and sunset photos at the lake, to last me a life time. I never finished the chapter. Maybe this weekend I will catch up with my voting. There is a lot of great photos its just weeding out all the bad.
