I've just started making my first dress from a real vintage pattern (I've made one from a Vintage Vogue pattern before, but it was made for modern sizes, so I didn't have any problems with that) and this thing about sizes is a bit of a bother. This particular pattern had it's sizes stated only from how tall a person is, isn't that strange? The one I'm using is a Simplicity pattern from 1961, here's a link:

Simplicity Pattern from 1961

I cut out the pieces in paper first just to get an idea of how it would fit, and the top part seems to work fine, but I had to add some width to the bottom part. I'm ok with doing toiles first before cutting into the real fabric, but I better find some cheap fabric for that in the future, it's hard to get a true picture from a dress made out of newspaper...

Anyhow, do you have any experience with this sizing business? Any good tips? And do you know if there is like a vintage size converter out there?

I couldn't see from the picture what it says about sizing on that pattern.

I've never seen a pattern that based it's sizing on height so I can't tell you anything about that. Vintage sizing was based on bust and waist measurements until about the fifties when number sizes like 12, 14 etc. were used. The correlating bust and waist measurements have changed quite a lot over the years.

A size 18 used to be a bust 36,and a 30 inch waist, and 39 inch hips, which was considered a medium size. 12 was usually a size 30 bust with a 23 inch waist (I think).

Today's sizes vary from maker to maker even between some of the pattern companies.

So the best way to figure if a pattern will fit is to ignore the sizes and measure your bust, waist, and hips, and read the envelop of the pattern to see what size bust etc. it fits.

I hope that's at least a little helpful?

You could look here,maybe:

I have made up samples of vintage patterns using old bedsheets, with good results...definitely easier to wear than newspaper. :-)

Hi y'all -

The local Walmart has a big table of $1.00 & $2.00 a yard fabric, you could also try thrift stores and yard sales for inexpensive fabric.
