Adorama is by far the cheapest photo store around NYC compared to B&H and J&R. I used to go to both until my friend suggested for me to try Adorama.

print out the lowest prices between adorama and B&H and bring them with you so wherever you end up they most likely match prices.

I've noticed that prices at Calumet are extremely similar to both B&H and Adorama, and it's by far a nicer shopping experience...it's a quieter environment and they are more knowledgeable, a little less pushy. I think they should be open during Passover as well. They're on 22nd b/t 5th & 6th Aves, but they close fairly early! They're around the corner from my office, but if I don't leave at 6 pm on the nose, I don't have time to shop before they close.

Failing that I have actually bought photo equipment from Circuit City, it just depends on what it is. The prices are competitive, but you have to know what you want as the staff doesn't have a clue.

B&H vs. Adorama - Winner is Adorama - Read On Please

A number of years ago, I purchased what B&H claimed was a "new" Canon EOS-1N - about $1500. When I got home I noticed certain defects that indicated this camera wasn't new, but perhaps a demonstrator they tried to pass off as new. A number of things indicated this camera was not new, like missing LCD segments in the panel on top of the camera, a missing protective plastic cover over the pressure plate, and a scratch on the bottom plate. I took the camera back (all the way from Long Island). Of course, they argued with me but I stood my ground until they gave me a new camera in a sealed box. I asked for a bit of compensation for my time and trouble and the sales clerk reached into counter drawer and pulled out a roll of unboxed 24-exposure film and handed it to me. Not only was this an insult, but after I used it and had the film developed, it turned out to be double-exposed, one set of exposures being photos of the other sales clerks in the store! Needless to say, I never set foot inside that store again - and their nasty in his response rep Henry Posner got upset because I posted this incident on the internet some time ago. Well, Henry, here it is again. Read it. For years prior to this incident, I spent anywhere from $6,000 to more than $10,000 in that store each year. These stupid people and their arrogance cost them.

Where do I go now? Adorama. Their staff is much friendlier and more helpful, and not pushy nor do they try to make you feel stupid when a question is asked. If you go on a Sunday before 9:00am and wait until the store opens, you can park right in front - all day for free! There is very limited parking in the B&H area, and, although B&H gives you free parking if you purchase a certain dollar amount, your car is parked by a parking attendant not associated with B&H. The one time I did this there was a huge door ding on my car when I returned. Of course, the parking attendant knew nothing and B&H denied any responsibility. And B&H specializes in long lines of waiting, if this is your thing.

I've never had any issues with B&H or their service. I like their liberal two-week return policy on camera equipment. In fact, I had a Sigma 50-150 for 3 weeks, and they let me return it for a full refund at the same time I was returning a one-week old Sigma 18-50. Great service!

(I've since purchased another Sigma 50-150 -- version 2 this time -- and picked up many more lenses, a second camera and umpteen bags. I've bought some items at 17th Street Photo and Ritz Camera, but I've only walked thru Adorama: they may be really good, but I found their display / hands-on quotient to be wanting -- from my point of view...YMMV. Admittedly, my experience was a cursory one, and these comments are not meant to detract from Adorama's service or quality of goods in any way.)

Joe, I don't know how long "A number of years ago" might be but if this was an incident alluded to elsewhere online dating from 1995, I'm not surprised it's left the forefront of my memory. 1995 was 13 years ago after all. We could Bar Mitzvah this incident. :-)

Nevertheless I am certainly sorry you harbor these ill feelings towards us.

Presuming your return was within our normal return period time frame there's no conceivable reason why anyone would have argued with you, so this adds an air of mystery to your tale. Frankly, the bit about double-exposed film strains credulity, IMO.

Henry Posner got upset because I posted this incident on the internet ...

I rarely get upset unless someone posts something untrue or insults our employees.

B&H gives you free parking if you purchase a certain dollar amount, your car is parked by a parking attendant not associated with B&H.

This is 100% wrong. The people who work in our lot are employees just like our sales associates and just like me.

I have nothing but respect for Adorama, and everyone there who knows me know it. I'm sorry Joe harbors ill will for what seems to have been a decade+ old incident. I remain grateful for the many kind words posted here (and elsewhere online) about us and the service we offer.

To Henry Posner of B&H and everyone else reading this.....

Two things upset me the most - that B&H would sell a used piece of equipment (the sales clerks knew it came from an open box and tried to repackage it) and try to pass it off as new (although in all fairness to B&H they did replace the unit after a round of severe questioning in which the employees tried to verbally belittle me and cast me as a liar about the original camera), and, secondly, it is true (you weren't there Henry, how would you know) that they did give me a roll of used film with images of some B&H employees (the same ones who were behind the counter). If these same employees had any smarts, they would have at least offered 5-10 rolls of film to compensate for my time (about five hours), travel expenses and trouble in bringing the "new" camera back to be exchanged for a really new one. Cheapness (perhaps a B&H trademark) surely didn't pay in this case - B&H lost a $10,000 annual account (to date that has cost them a minimum of $130,00 in sales from me) for selling a used or demo camera as new and for a few rolls of film. I only wish I had saved that roll of exposed film so that I could present it to disbeliever Henry Posner. In his own way he is calling me a liar, which I am certainly not. I could have then posted those photos on the Internet..... But then again that's Henry's job to b.s. his cheap way out of everything rather than accept what the customer says and try to compensate for any customer losses. The film story is not one I made up - my mind is not that imaginative.

If these parking lot employees were not B&H employees, why did they lie to me and state they worked for an outside parking corporation?

From Henry:

From Joe:
Why are you such a fool, Henry? Why do you bring religion into this? It has nothing to do with the incident whatsoever. Do you think your religion is better than mine? Reminds me of a certain ethnic group that brings race into discussions or arguments every chance they get, when it has nothing to do with the matter at hand. Don't be a religion monger or a fool, Henry, stick to the subject at hand. I don't care about your Bar Mitzvah time frame and the incident being compared to it.

Where do I go now? Adorama. Their staff is much friendlier and more helpful, not pushy nor do they try to make you feel stupid when a question is asked. If you go on a Sunday around 9:00-915 am and wait until the store opens at 9:30am, you can park right in front or very nearby - all day for free! Try easy parking around B&H - it's difficult at best or you have to park many, many blocks away or pay exorbitant prices for parking near B&H. There is very, very limited on-street parking near B&H, along with a short time limit and New York City parking "cops" dying to write as many violations as possible for the day. B&H gives you free parking if you purchase a certain dollar amount (believe it is $100); Adorama's "free parking" allows you to park near or right in front of their store, make your purchase, and then go elsewhere until the next morning, without a mininum purchase, time limit or parking fee - great for shopping, sightseeing or just seeing Manhattan. One time when I was a B&H customer I parked in their lot and when I returned there was a huge door ding on the left driver's door of my my car. Of course, the parking attendant knew nothing and B&H denied any responsibility. And B&H specializes in long lines of waiting, if this is your thing. You have to stand on a minimum of three lines even if purchasing one item.....

Good luck to everyone entering the doors of B&H - you'll probably need it. And do give Adorama at least a try.....

Having read all that, I feel obliged as an English amateur living in NY to stress to all foreign photographers visiting Manhattan: make sure B&H is open (no, sadly, they don't pay me for this). Their combination of service, reliability and price is as good as it gets.

And be very, very careful about the countless camera shops that advertise improbably low prices for gear in NY. Google the name of the seller + scam or + fraud first. You might get a nasty surprise.

Remember the golden rule: if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Every store has at least one unsatisfied customer. With that said, there are a few shops in New York City that I myself flat out refuse to patronize but B&H is not one of them. Thank you for running such a tight ship, Henry.

I like B&H and over the many years I've done business with them, seeming to return as much or more (joke) than I buy, my loyalty gets stronger.

I use Adorama for things B&H doesn't carry and sometimes I slum and use Amazon but I prefer to support a family-owned, professionally oriented store, especially one with a brick and mortar storefront where I can get my hands on the equipment.

j&r has a good variety, but I always shop on line, because the people in the store are jerks! always very rude and if you ask too many questions they become upset and they will walk away from you even when you are asking questions. If it seems that you just want information, but not shopping they will leave you hanging!

So far, so good. I buy ALL my photo equipment from B&H. I've had some issues with some lenses and the return/exchange was flawless with little trouble. The prices are fair and if Canon has rebates, they're usually applied at the time of purchase.
Parking is a bitch, but since I only go there when I'm ready to shell out $100+, my parking is free. If there is one thing I hate about B&H is the fact that its closed on Saturdays!

Over the years I have done the bulk of my shopping at B&H and Adorama with no problems what so ever. Whenever I travel into the "City"/Manhattan, it is always by subway to avoid traffic and parking... All part of being a New Yorker. Generally, the staff at both stores are courteous and helpful. Though there were a few occasions when the salesperson may have been less than helpful but I log it up to the salesperson having a bad day so I seek out another salesperson.

I have bought from both B&H and Adorama. Both experiences were very good, and the employees who helped me were knowledgeable and nice, and not pushy in the least. The only problem I've ever had with Adorama is that products that have been bought but not shipped/picked up are listed as available to be bought.
