What equipment?

view profile

uneremita says:

Hi everybody
I'm planning a 2-week trip to Iceland during august. I'll be mainly hiking and taking photos.
It's the first time and I don't know what to expect in terms of light and weather conditions. What equipment do you bring when travelling around Iceland? (Cameras, films, lenses, tripod...)

Thanks!

you never know what to expect to take everything.. hehe! wide lenses and tripod is necessity. The light can be very beautiful and it last until night time. Hope this helps a little.

reading about the weather in iceland, I once read: "if you don't like the weather, just wait a moment"

'Course it helps!
I really dont know what to expect... Mmmm, wide lenses. Maybe I should save some backpack space by leaving my 300mm at home.

Don´t underestimate the wind in Iceland! The tripod should be very steady! Light: very long day light (nordic summer), no darkness in the night... Perhaps you need the 300mm on a whale-watching-tour :-)

Should I bring an underwater camera? :D

@kabbisa: I read that sentence too, but it was just a little less optimistic: "If you don't like the weather, just wait a moment: it will get worse".

@Now in Iceland: thanks for the info! Actually, I'm getting a little frightened by what I'm hearing about wind in Iceland, especially as far as camping is concerned. Hope tent AND tripod are steady enough ;)

Any advice about film choice? I am planning to bring some rolls of velvia100 and provia100... (I discovered slides only a few months ago, and I have absolutely no experience at shooting landscapes)

Yes, take an underwater camera!

And a sturdy tent, worst wind I've ever camped in (I'm from Scotland!)

And sensor cleaning gear of some kind if you're shooting digital, you won't be able to get any there.

And dried milk if you want any, they don't seem to have that.

And the contents of your savings account.

Thank you Duncan! Dried milk is already at the top of my list.
Seems like I'll have to buy a new tent...

Are you shooting landscape or birds? If you like taking bird pictures you should take the 300 mm also.

Hi sigfus,
I'm shooting landscape only. I want to concentrate on that... Since I have almost no experience in landscape photography, I thought Iceland would be a nice place to practice :)

Landscape only, then when you arrive just check out the weather forcast and head for the best weather. About the lenses and stuff to bring it depends on the camera you are you using.

Hi Uneremita! Well come to visit Iceland!
1. August, the weather will be good.
2. Iceland has beautifull and special places to take lanscape.
3. Because of you will be on far-long- trip so I think you need not use heavy Tripod for lanscape. If worse wind come, it will be very difficult to take pictures. Wind can blowse almost every tripod. The light in Iceland on August will help you alot for landscape pictures with-out tripod (you need tripod only take night-pictures)
4. Very good if you can take film + digital. ( I love colour of velvia & slide)
5. If you need any more information contact me: vietisphoto@yahoo.com

Thanks vietis!
1) Great news!
2) Cant wait to be there!
3) Actually, after a first try with packing my backpack I decided to leave the heavy tripod at home and bring a much lighter one.

Thank you!

Hi! I just came back from 15 days around Iceland.
I confirm what the other guys have told about wind, light (so particular!), cleaning gear for cameras and lenses...
Pay attention: it's quite cold! And if you are travelling by car, take a good 4W and fuel as soon as you have consumed half!
Should you need any kind of info, just contact me via flickrmail. Otherwise... just enjoy! you will fall in love with this amazing and sensational Country! ciao! Chiara

Excellent advice about the fuel, Chiara. It seems like everything is a little more than half a tank away...so keep it full!

With regard to wind, here are a few short videos I took at the end of September last year...including one on top of Helgafell.

In August the nights start to get dark. Not pitch black, mind you, and the days will be very long with relatively bright evenings.

For landscape anywhere, the Sigma 10-20mm wide is a must!
I would also pack N-grad filters & if you want 2 minute long exposures on landscape then the B+W 3.0 10 stop neutral density filter is also a must. This filter will give excellent dramatic clouds. Oh, and also a polarizer.
