85/1.4 AIS vs. 50/1.2 AIS
 |
I have the 85/1.4 AIS, and I find it a great lens, but too heavy. Will the 50/1.2 AIS perform in simlar fashion in terms of boken, sharpness?
My 85 is not getting used very much, so my thought was going for a 50. Currently my set up is my bad boy F3HP/MD4 - 85/1.4, 28/2.8, 24/2.8 all AIS. [side note - even thinking about going for a 28/2.0 AIS, I have spring fever!]
Thank you.

The 50mm f/1.2 is certainly a great lens, check out some sample pics on pbase: www.pbase.com/cameras/nikon/50_12_ais

The 50 f1.2's a great lens, but doesn't perform in a similar fashion to the 85. Much harsher Bokeh, not nearly as sharp wide-open. Very good lens nonetheless, but it wouldn't be my choice for a replacement for the 85/1.4 on film. Look at the 105mm f2.5 instead, a bit more reach, similar performance, but slower and much smaller and lighter.
That said, I do find complaints about lens weight on a F3/MD-4 combo kinda interesting. Losing the MD-4 would probably be a better method of weight reduction.

..or keep them all, the MD-4 and the 85/1.4 AIS, and add something else, maybe a 35/2 or 50/1.4 and as said above, the very good 105/2.5 AIS.

you should add to the list the 105mm f/1.8 :)

If the 85/1.4 is too big and heavy, the similarly sized 105/1.8 is likely to have the same issue.
