Nikon 300mm F4 from keh.com

view profile

~sakthi says:

Hi,
I have been checking for availability of 300mm f4 in many online stores. I found Keh.com to have a new piece of glass at 1,124$

I'm not familiar with keh.com if some one can tell me about their service. I would appreciate it.

Also, I read rumors about the VR for this lens. Since I want to use the lens for the summer break, and can't wait until a new VR model to be available, which would probably take a very long time. I reckon to go with this lens.

I've ordered a number of older lenses (all manual-focus), and two film cameras from KEH. I've never had any problems, and I've always been more than satisfied with how they rate their merchandise. Anything BGN or better works great.

I found a many lens I might consider but ignored BGN since I read the glass might have some scratches but picture quality is not affected.

If you say BGN is good, I can worth a try :)

My experience with KEH's BGN lenses is that they have cosmetic wear to the exterior, but few if any marks on the glass, and nothing that impacts optical quality. Of course, your mileage may vary, especially since you're looking at modern lenses that may handle differently (i.e., lenses with plastics and electronics may be more fragile than those that are all glass and metal)

I've had the same experience. Worn exterior, but good glass condition.

KEH.com is a great place to find a "fair" market value on a piece of equipment.

They also have many other bargains besides lenses and bodies too.. browse through what they have sometime and you may find one heck of a deal!

We have a 300 F4 , the non D version without AF-S

we enjoy it immensely

It works best with a solid rest preferably a good tripod
i've taken a few good handheld shots though it is a little heavy and awkward.
Great for Birds on a feeder not the most comfortable to pack around

be careful to carry it while on camera by supporting the lens not the Camera [ or both together] the camera body mount is not really strong enough for any sizable lens

I'm sure you will enjoy it

If you google "Keeble and Shuchat" in Palo Alto, CA, you'll see lots of people have posted online reviews saying they are called rude, ripoff, expensive, as well as being a ripoff and expensive, and a total ripoff.

. they are just down the road from me...

that being said, and in regards to USED lenses --as of late, KEH.com's prices are 2x-3x as much as the store everyone like to bash as too expensive.

KEH's prices can be high, and are generally higher than a *good* bargain on eBay or Craigslist. They also seem to be pretty quick to inflate the price of what may or may not be collectible items. : )

But their ratings are very consistent and very conservative, which has to be taken into account, especially when comparing their pricing to others with more liberal ratings of their merchandise. If you restrict yourself mainly to KEH's BGN lenses, there are some excellent deals, and I've never gotten a lens from them and found some undeclared defect or, in fact, any issues of any kind.

That said, I have seen a bit of an increase in general in the pricing of their cheapest Nikon lenses -- the BGN-grade non-AI lenses. A goodly part of that is probably due to interest from D40 owners like me...and since I've pointed a lot of folks in that direction, some of that is probably *my* fault.

A person from KEH emailed me that they couldn't verify my debit card and address. So he asked me to do a wire transfer into an Account. I'm new to this country so I'm not sure if this is a good option.

Any one has had similar experience?

Nope I'm studying in Kansas for the past 9 months, and I want to ship it to Kansas. They said they couldn't verify my name and address.

But I have decided not to do a wire transfer.

I would find an alternate method of funds transfer. Your computer may have been compromised -- I wouldn't trust email communication in this instance. Call their store and arrange to send a bank check or something.

Good call on not wiring money. As OldUncleMe says, don't trust email communication for something like this. Someone may have read this thread, saw that you ordered the lens, gone to your university website to get your email address and tried to scam you. Hopefully that's not the case, but it only takes a phone call to KEH to confirm things.

Had a bad experience with KEH. I had one on checkout for days and they wouldn't respond to my mails. They had to ship to the Philippines and they couldn't provide any tracking info. I said, I am willing to pay extra if they can ship with tracking but they never replied back even after several resends. I ended up cancelling the order.

I had now canceled the order, seems there are stocks available from BHPhoto. I will probably order from them :) I need the lens for the long weekend next week.

I've picked up a half dozen lenses at KEH and always been happy with their ratings. Their BGN lenses truly are, and they have a no questions asked money-back period, and a 60 day warranty as well.

My last awesome buy, a 80-200 f/2.8 AF (push pull, not a new one) was a BGN ($450!!!) and being dumb, I didn't notice the sticky blades at first. I called them about a month after purchase, got a repair ticket, sent the lens back, and they returned it fully cleaned and un-stickied for no cost other than shipping it to them. I checked around locally, and it would have been a $200 repair.

If it was ebay, I would have been listed in "EXCELLENT CONDITION" and I would have been hosed.
