[Open thread] PEACE! signs ピースサイン

view profile

nofrills says:

Have your camera ready, get on the street, and ask someone "May I have your picture please?" (In Japanese, 「写真 [sha-shi-n]、撮らせて[to-ra-se-te]もらって[mo-ra-tte]いいですか[i-i-de-su-ka]?」 or simply 「写真 [sha-shi-n]、いいですか[i-i-de-su-ka]?」 showing your camera.)Most likely they smiles back and take a pose... with "PEACE!" signs.

Don't be upset if they are showing the two fingers with the palm inwards. There's no distinction in Japan between the "Victory sign" and the "two fingered salute." When I was a child we were already doing it, so I don't know its origins, but they say it came from American anti-war movement in the 1960s. The Wikipedia says it was a famous skater who also was a peace activist that helped spread the sign as a "peace sign".

My theory is that it was also popularized by the volleyball TV drama everyone watched back in the 60s, called "サインはV (sain wa bui)"

Manako:
Thank you for your info! It's eye-opening really. Drama (sain wa bui), news (anti-war movement in the US) and the skater (Winter Olympics in Sapporo) must have been dominating on the TV at the time. This is how a "pop culture" begins and spreads, maybe.

By the way, people as old as my parents do not always show the "PEACE!" signs when I have a camera. They listened to Elvis Presley and rockabilly, not the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and were fully grown-up at the time of the anti-war movement.

Dr Hand:
Thank you for your add! I adore these girls, they are bravery itself!! Cheers.

So far, they must be the youngest "PEACE!" makers in our pool. :)

And even in the water...

So it's their (our) first "language". :)

amitnxt:
No problem. Ah, your "all sizes" button doesn't show the HTML codes. I have no clue why this happens, because with another picture of yours it works all right... mmm, is this to do with the download settings?

Anyway I grabbed the jpg URL and made it alright. Don't forget to post one of these to the group pool, and to tag the pictures ("Peace/V signs" would be great) so that every one can follow the same theme pictures on your own flickr page.
(^^)v PEACE!

This thread is open and waits for your "PEACE! signs" pictures added. To post your picture:
1) Open your photo page.
2) Find "All Sizes" button right above the picture, and click on it.
3) Click on "small". Just beneath the small picture, you find the HTML code with "1. Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage" instruction.
4) Put your mouse there, click once, and go "ctrl + c" on your keyboard.
5) Come back to this thread, and press "ctrl + v" on the comment field ("Reply to this topic?" field).
6) "Preview" then "Post Now", and you're done!

Cheers! (^^)v
