They don't give you 1:1 or better as a dedicated solution to macro, So I'd say they would count as poor man. Also figuring you probably spent less than $50 on a couple of them.

I hope so. I got a set with a +1 +2 and +4 years ago, and I still use them. I like them a lot, as it is an inexpensive and easy alternative.

Thank you. Yep I paid way less than $50. $8.15 on ebay to be exact. I can't wait until i get them!

I just picked up a set (+1, +2, and +4) last week for my 50mm lens. And as a bonus, I just figured out that they fit my 20 year old Nikkor 35-70mm zoom lens as well.
I can't wait to play around with these more.

The + bits are in dioptres, and +10 dioptre is designed to produce true 1:1 macro when used with a 50mm equivalent lens.
In theory you could add all 4 together to make +17 but that would be fuzzy as heck :P
