Don't know anything about those places, and have only been to Prague on a couple of short trips, but I love it.
I can recommend a few great places to get some food (other than the sausage-and-alcohol vendors on the street corners, which are fun):
Klub Arkitektu - Great deals on food and the atmosphere is really cool... it's adjacent to an archtecture school (?) and there are sometimes exhibits and a design/architecture gift shop next door.
Radost FX - A vegetarian cafe (REALLY tasty food and cool retro/sci-fi/lounge atmosphere), lounge, and bar. DJ/nightclub late at night. Very cool (a bit smoky, though)

The Hungarian Grotto - Great traditional Hungarian food and drinks at reasonable prices

For things to do -- theres the Castle (very crowded, somewhat pricey for tickets to different sections); Charles Bridge (must-see - and you will see it, I'm sure); the amazing clock in the old town; the Jewish Quarter (with the oldest European synagogue and jewish graveyard - and reputable where the legendary Golem was created); and some great Art Nouveau artwork (including an Alphons Mucha stained-glass window and several sculptural/structural works)

The excellent metro system has many photogenic stations, particularly Andel station.

Views from the banks of Vltava and bridges are very picturesque. There are also wonderful places in Vysehrad and on Petrin hill. The architecture is wonderful in all of Prague streets. There are also more contemporary buildings like the Dancing House by Frank O. Gehry on the embankment Rasinovo Nabrezi or the TV tower.

Thanks for all the replies! I can't wait to get there. I believe our hotel is very close to the metro line. Great food recomendations too!
Do you know of any good jazz clubs? And, how's the weather over there looking for next week?

Also, the Opera is very good and very affordable there; marionettes and puppet shows are another interesting sight (see my Prague photo set for more info/places/ideas

Well, the weather is pretty warm right now. It hasn't been much of a winter at all. By the time you're here it should be warmer, though it's likely it might rain.

I visited Prague for 3 days last year and was never without a moment to capture some good shots....
My fav areas were the vibrant Charles Bridge with the musicians, artisans and wonderful statues.....
Also a walk along the Vlatava river is great.
Some areas that have fewer tourists include the old castle/fortress at Vysehrad - especially at sunset and Chateau Troja (a bit harder to get to)....
Then again, just visit any street in Old Town to marvel at the buildings.
BUT...if I was to say there is a sure must see, then head to the Jewish Cemetry - be sure to arrive at opening and go in the reverse order of viewing (head to cemetry first).... you will have about 20 minutes before all the tourists arrive...

The most famous and classy jazz clubs are perhaps Reduta, www.redutajazzclub.cz (Bill Clinton once played saxophone there) and AghaRTA (www.agharta.cz). I didn't have a chance to visit them during my visits, but I really hope to do it some day.

Last year January 2006: -22 degrees C and shot this picture on the stairs without tourists: Too cold.
www.flickr.com/photos/fotohuisrovo/190902189/
This year (2007) half February +6 degrees and some rain.
But it's a beautifull city where real artists are working continuously even at -22 degrees C on a pencil painting (so NO water involved of course).

I don't know about Chodov but know Podebrady well. It is a small spa city with lot of parks, fairly large castle located right on the main square which also contains number of old and very photogenic houses. The weather there now will be most likely crappy unless you are lucky (sorry), but it shouldn't stop you from getting lot of interesting images. Also note the 13th century build (if i remember correctly) church. There is a fair number of pubs and restaurants; make sure to visit Bila Ruze (White Rose) right beside the main bridge across Labe river and have a pint of Pilsner Urquell - it tastes the best there!

If you're looking for jazz, check out U Maleho Glena. If you're there on a Wednesday night it rules - the band is amazing. Head downstairs to see them or hang out upstairs for awesome food. It's run by an American, but is very Czech.
Don't worry about the tourists right now. It's still too cold for many. I was there a year ago and it was freezing up until the last couple of weeks of April. The castle shouldn't be all that busy, except for when the guards are changing.

Thank you all for your great replies! I can't wait to leave now! I should start packing sometime.... If anybody is near Podebrady on Monday March 5th, we're supposed to be playing at 3 (15:00) - somewhere. Likewise, at the cultural center in Chodov, Zahrada. It's a college jazz band that's very good.
@callender - U Maleho Glena looks great and is even having a jam session while we're in town. Thanks so much!
Anybody else have any ideas? I'll try to get to all your suggestions!

If any of you are interested in antique streetcars (trams) and buses, don't miss the Public Transport Museum www.dp-praha.cz/en/hist-muz.htm , or, at the very least, ride the historic tram all the way www.flickr.com/photos/42057291@N00/209370126/ , a great way to see some more of the city. The underground system is fine and some of the stations are very interesting, but there's so much more to see above ground! Alas, the Technical Museum is closed due to renovation, here you could have seen some of the fantastic Czech Tatra cars with the impressive dorsal fins on their backs. Yet, here's one: www.flickr.com/photos/42057291@N00/46179885/ . You'll love Prague, it's a great city where you won't be bored for a second. No need to look for photo ops either: they're just ANYWHERE! Don't miss the Castle www.hrad.cz/en/prazsky_hrad/navsteva_hradu.shtml ! Taking the tram will save you a walk uphill or up the stairs, and the ride is quite scenic. Take tram 22 or 23 (e.g. from Národní třída or the Malostranská metro station). On your walk down, visit Kampa, cross the Karluv Most (Charles Bridge), then walk into the old city centre up to the Tyn Cathedral, or even further.....
Have a great trip!

great tips here!
i should be in Prague in mid April, from the 13th to the 15th. what about a flickr meeting in some interesting place in the old town? We could do a "discover secret places of the center" photoshoot or something like that.
any recommended hotel for staying 2 nights? As soon as I'll have my flight confirmed I'll post the exact date of arrival.
cheers!

There are some other places that are not so photographed but which are pretty striking in their own ways... The triumph of communistic engineering that is the prague metro is pretty impressive, especially the cleanliness and abstract designs, also true of the national theatre and for some modern interesting architecture check out the dancing building down by the Vlatava. Also the TV tower at Zizkov is a dominating fantastically interesting building and you can get some nice retro futuristic shots there.
If you're in town for an extended period I reccomend a trip to the Dvoka sarka national park at the end of the 26 tram line... There are some lovely little streams and quite impressive rock formations.
Best views are from Letna park, especially by the metronome, also Rigovy sadu and vyserhrad have nice views too. If you don't mind paying a little the view from the top of the petrin tower is incredibly striking.
you can always find great little photo ops in the old town areas and they are fantastic for exploring.

Prague is very different now than when I was last there. I'd imagine it is still a wonderful and magical city, but more mainstream. I haven't been since the flood so I'm not sure whether some of my favorite spots still exist. I think you will be visiting during the Prague Spring which is a great time to be there. It will likely still be a bit cold, however, you should miss the worst of the weather. Take some warm clothes just in case, I used to visit from April to June and could easily go from winter clothes to summer clothes in that time although not necessarily in that order.
Podebrady was an idyllic village several years ago and I suspect it still is. The Bohemian Crystal factory is there and you should be able to purchase crystal souvenirs there for considerably less than in Prague. You can also stroll around in the park-like settings and enjoy a bistro or a boat ride on the river.
Best of luck on your trip!
