Which Lens To Use Underwater?

view profile

YukiKabuki  Pro User  says:

I'm thinking about putting my 400D underwater but am not willing to do so with my L lenses. I would like to buy an inexpensive (+/- $300) lens to do the job underwater and was wondering if anybody can give me any suggestions. I know that people sometimes use wide, sometimes macro... Which lens do you use? What's yourtake?

I use a 60mm for macro and a 15mm FE for wide angle. Both are reasonably priced for my Nikon.

YOu want to Shoot Macro or wide?
I find the Canon 60mm Macro is great on the 400D as you have the cropping.

As nitroxjunkie said macro and super wide, this is what you need depend on scenes you gonna shoot
60mm and FE or some WA zoom lense will be fine. BTW, you can take comprehensive ensuranse for any photo gear you are diving with

For general-purpose zoom underwater, I bought a Sigma 17-70. It can get very close to macro, but also close to wide-angle. Check out my underwater pix, most of them are with the Sigma.

I agree on the Canon 60mm for general macro (the 100mm is IMO a better lens, but not as flexible).

For wide-angle I'd suggest the Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye and a dome.

I actually used the kit zoom with my 20D. It is not a great lens, but it is decent and I don't need f/2.8 underwater. You have to make sure that your port has a gear available to match up with the lens choice if you want a zoom. In some ways, this is the most limiting factor, so you should look as see what is available.

As for lenses, if you go fixed and are going to a macro site, I would use a 100mm macro instead of the 60. It lets you get back a bit and still shoot 1:1 or get in very close and better than 1:1. If you go wide, make sure you have a good strobe set up. I would go at least 16mm so you can shoot semi-wide on the crop camera. A 12mm is even better, but then you are getting into your expensize glass again.
