Yep, the 50/1.8 II is a great lens when you want very shallow DOF.

I 'm a compulsive 50mm shooter (occasionally I do use a 35mm prime too). The lenses I prefer to shoot with for shallow depth of field are the Summilux 50mm f1.4 for Leica M and Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4 ZF for Nikon.

I bought the 85/1.8 recently. Haven't used it much yet, but it's a sharp lens. I also tried the 135/2L, and I was floored by how sharp it is. See www.flickr.com/photos/xenedis/200954147/ for an example.

The 135/2L is great for bokeh and extremely shallow DOF when shot at f/2.

Rather old, but I really love the old m42 Pentacon 135f/2.8. It is called "bokeh monster" :). It's a pity that in my D50 I lose infinity focus, but still usable at portrait distances. Really really nice.

Casio: f/3.6 - 11.8 mm (hehe)

Yashinon 80mm f/3.5 MF

Nikon 50 mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor

In my opinion, a shallow DOF does not automatically equal bokeh. To me, bokeh is when the areas that are out of focus make the image interesting and/or aesthetically pleasing.
It is usually easier to to create bokeh with larger apertures, but most of the time it does not matter what equipment you have, but how you see.
That being said, I use my 50mm f/1.8 as much as possible.

Bokeh refers to the out-of-focus highlights, but is often interchangeably used to refer to background blur.
Here are two shots I took using my 135/2L. The first shows bokeh as well as shallow DOF, and the second shows shallow DOF only.

Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 USM,
a great macro lens also suitable for portraits,
just posted the first 3 shots here:

oh, and I really enjoyed the discussion and your thoughts about DOF. I think I found a great place to learn, thank you!

Canon EF 200 f/1.8L. That lens is my absolute favourite for shalow DOF and produces remarkable bokeh.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 I've only just bought it and the quality of images and bokeh it produces is great. Cracking value for money at £69 too!

I haven't had experience with many lenses - but I do quite like the bokeh of my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III:

You mean my 75-300 :)
The long focal lengths can make for attractive bokeh as well.

I'd say they're two different things.....my mamiya TLR gives me the best DOF control

.......but my Canon 135mm F2.8 gives me my favourite bokeh

The 55-200mm vr produces nice shallow dof at 200mm.

Although my Nikkor 50mm f1.4 is brilliant, I still think that my Tamron 28-200 XR when used at the 200mm end is my favourite :)

Just joined the group and really just started to get into this shallow depth of field stuff...
I use the Sony 50mm f1.4 on my a700, absolutely love this lens and the results it produces keep surprising me, especially when used at the wider apertures :)
