t'other one had stretched to 5 pages though I think proved a bit of a hit though perhaps a bit tedious to scroll through or for others to enter into convo so thought I'd kick off a new general chat thread.

Old one here (if you have a day to spare reading) www.flickr.com/groups/sheffield/discuss/72157603360595217/ but will give you the general idea of what it's all about

Soooooooo.... who else heard that flippin' plane at 11am(ish) and thought something was gonna crash?!?!

I just started playing tennis again this morning, I really feel like I'm going to regret it in the morning.

I like the new surface on the Weston park courts, but it's a bit annoying how it is quite grippy when wet, then gets a little slippy as it's drying, before going grippy again when dry

Yeah there was quite a discussion about it on the Sheffield forum as the noise was so loud. I think it was something military but as I read last night nobody quite knew what. The noise was so thunderous many of us thought something was coming down!

I was surprised to see they've stripped the Sykes gateposts down nicely, anyway.

I heard the noise vaguely, but there are roadworks outside our office and I thought at first it was that (we've got double-glazing).

I never noticed a thing. But then for most of my life I've lived a few miles from Heathrow airport, had Concorde going supersonic overhead twice a day, making all of the windows rattle, so I'm pretty much immune to plane noise.

When I was digging at Heathrow Terminal 5 in 2002, everyday we had a 'Concorde Break' - everyone dashed for the site hut so as not to be completely blown away as Concorde took off! I hated that dig.

I saw one in the middle of the day in July 2006 (it was very warm and sunny) on the Don from the bridge on Rutland Road (at the side of the Samuel Osborne works). There was also a heron. I took a pic of the kingfisher but even with zoom it just came out as a tiny dot!

Here he is (best viewed large ... ha ha!)

I was on a canal boat through Rotherham the other week, and the driver (?) mentioned that they see a lot of kingfishers on that stretch. I've never seen any myself in this part of the country, but there was one lived in Wanstead Park, near my old house, which I used to watch regularly. Beautiful creatures.

The idea came to me as I was reading the Sheffield forum earlier and someone wanted to know where they had been spotted and it seems they are a lot more common than I thought. Even some been spotted by Lady's Bridge which is where I was going to head before the sun did a disappearing act.
I've seen plenty of Heron before but never a Kingfisher. I believe there are plenty of hatchlings (is that a word?!) too on the river right now.

Nice spot evissa :)

Kingfishers tend to hang around the Penistone Rd side of the Don cos its a bit quieter for them. But I've seen them off Ladys bridge before. Too fast to photo though! Zoom!

Theres two pair of herons with a nests next to ladys bridge and riverside development respectively, they tend to hang about around 3pm. Usually around the weir.

Dan Sumption  Pro User  says:

I *love* herons. I know they're not all that rare, but they are so shy that it always feels like such a privelege to see one. Again, when I lived in London I and used to take my (then) baby daughter to Wanstead Park every week, there was a posse of herons that used to hang out right in the middle of the lake, obscured by trees and islands, it was a real pleasure to get a good view of one.

I hardly ever see them in Sheffield, but on the rare occasion when I get up very early (6am-ish) and take the dog down to Crookes Valley Park, there is always one sitting at the edge of the lake. As we approach it, it slowly and irritatedly unfolds its wings, flops into the air, does a couple of flaps and the lands on the other side of the lake where it resumes its statue-like vigil.

But... there is a downside. When I was very little, my granny lived in the servants cottage adjoining an amazing 1920s mock stately home in Bowdon (near Altrincham/Manchester). They had 5 assorted goldfish & carp ponds in the gardens. Unfortunately, the herons discovered these, and when I was about 4 they all had to be covered in green netting to keep the herons off. They never seemed quite the same after that. At the time, I seem to remember cursing the Herons whenever we walked past their treetop hideout in Dunham Forest.

I'd never seen a Heron until recent years and then one was pointed out to me at Rivelin Valley. I was absolutely amazed at the sheer size of it and when I saw it fly was in awe. They are really common between Rivelin and Hillsborough park and whenever I've seen them fly over between the two have felt like I'm being transported to so pre-historic era! It's like a strange effortless flight yet they are enormous!

I've been lucky enough to get a few shots of them now, mainly feeding or sat in tree's by Hillsborough Park (though to this day I have no idea how the bloody great awkward looking things land in tree's) and I agree it always seems such a privilege to see them.

They are indeed greedy buggers though

Wow!

The other thing that amazes me about herons - they seem to have two states of being. They are either this tall, lanky bird with long wings, or they are a hunched up bundle of an old grey man.

The photo above looks like a heron 90% of the way towards morphing into "old man".

haha I think at this stage (daft as it sounds) me and this bird had reached an 'understanding'. It knew I was there yet this was a totally private and quiet area of a very busy park in the Summer but no one else had seen it land here. So as I crept trying to get closer it kept an eye on me yet stayed still.... I took a few quick shots and left it be.

I now sound totally barkin' but thats how it seemed :)

This reminds me, I must go and see these guys! I first saw Herons properly last year up on Northumberland when I was driving back to our B&B from the Farne Islands - saw one flying over the car and followed it, parked up and looked out from a sand dune to the beach, where 2 adults looked like they were teaching a young one to fish... I spent a couple of ours hunkered down watching/snapping them flying around chasing seagulls and having a great old time.

I'm sure they knew I was there - flew over me a couple of times, but seemed very chilled about it...

There's apparently a heronry at Trentabank Reservoir with a hide too.

I'll also no doubt be sorting out the pics from the wedding i did in Florence last weekend. I've edited down to about 400 now...and thats without rescuing any with post processing! They're all straight from camera...its just too many! I didn' teven use the 10fps burst mode that much either....

Oh and this pic of mine was shortlisted in the final 10 of Canon's 'The Assignment' competition in the sport category. I think they pick country winners on Sunday. So no doubt i'll be far more bothered about that than i should be :)

Well from first edit there's 680 that are totally useable (well more but i'm employing at least some qual control :). But i need to get it down, they want to put 200 on the net somewhere (maybe flickr) and then i'll produce a book for em which will have about 100 to 150 i reckon. Then maybe get maybe 10 printed quite large.

But something i did notice, in Aperture in preview mode you can skip though them really quick, like at about 10-15fps. Well if you have all 1200 that i took in sequence it actually makes a cool little video!
