Question for the Admins - where did my images go?

view profile

martsky  Pro User  says:

I posted some pics yesterday from the Highland Fling in Graves Park of the falconry display, and they seem to have disappeared from the group - have they been removed?

Can't remember exactly which ones they were, they were a selection from these...

Just wondering...

I thought i recognised them from there so i had a look yesterday and read the description. It said a lot about the birds but nothing about the fact they were at the Highland Fling in Graves Park (though they are tagged as such i think). I'm guessing they just thought they were random bird shots and not really relevant to the Sheffield group so maybe they were deleted.

I'd wait for an admin to reply but maybe it'd be an idea to reword the description to give context. There is occasional cleaning of the pool to remove shots that aren't relevant, you could have been caught up in that.

yup, no steel balls = not really taken in sheffield I'm afraid!! haha

reword, repost and I'm sure it will be fine ;)

tho to be honest if they were removed for their lack of relevance, I'd like to suggest remove all the self portraits that are in the group.

there are a few group members who seem to post nothing but these, and I can only presume its a blatant attempt to get some sort of attention.

Yeah, thought it might be something like that - although as you said, they were tagged and geotagged, so I wondered if there was some other problem - "lack of relevance" for instance...

Cheers for the replies guys... even you Jim ;-)

I'll wait till I hear more before I bother re-posting though I think!

Photos posted to the group should be of or about Sheffield, if the pic is labeled or described as of/at a Sheffield event then they will usually be left. If the photograph is of something that could be anywhere such as a flower, animal or sunset then they will usually be removed from the group.

Lots of self portraits have been removed, it's difficult to keep up sometimes.

Thanks for the reply. Just to be clear, if they're clearly labelled as at a Sheffield event, shots such as these would be OK? Admittedly, they are pure animal pics, with no context, which is why I was unsure. I did tag and geo-tag them, but probably should have descibed the location too...

PS you don't really mean that about sunsets do you? I'm sure I've seen the odd one sneak into the pool ;-)

Personally I'd allow sunsets as they will be unique to Sheffield (for instance it wont be the same down south or way up north on the same day) and they'd also have a sheffield skyline (and I'm not just saying that as I take many sunset pics, just as I think people looking in might like to see our gorgeous sunsets here in sheff and not just some city thats just seemingly a sky packed full of cranes!)

I'd have allowed martsky's birds as they were at a Sheffield event and not for instance, his pets taken in the back yard though it can be hard to check all shots such as this. I totally agree about the random ducks, animals etc though.

It's not a group that has ever needed to be heavily moderated (while I've been a member anyway) so some shots will of course get through while on another day perhaps one of us may fancy a proper trawl and clean of the pool but hopefully we can all tolerate a few differing opinions :)

The sunsets one is a bit difficult, we'll see what comes out of discussion, every one will have a view on this. I tend to leave ones with a Sheffield sky line, there are plenty of groups about sunsets but as GG says we would never want it to be heavily moderated. If the birds are described as hawk at the Highland Fling event thats OK by me. I'm sure some people would argue about ducks etc. :-)

to be honest I think this is one of the areas where this group fails in comparison to those such as leeds and nottingham, they accept portraits and random tidbits in quite happily (presumably knowing that the world won't end if they do).

removing things which could be taken anywhere else will probably leave the pool with nothing more than the same sheffield cliche's.
the balls, the waterfalls etc... and to be honest there are other groups better suited to those (there is actually specific groups for each of them!!).

but why can't flowers be accepted to the pool, they exist in sheffield and sheffield has won awards for some of its displays (city in bloom).

I like JDs point about the pool being filled with Sheffield cliches .. it sometimes does feel that the same things are being done to death.

Could we have a weekly theme, where people can post anything to the group that meets that theme. Not a competition, just an opportunity for us to see something different in the group.

You've currently 750 members....most of whom will just have joined to slap a couple of pics in for self promotion (we've all been there) and will never actually be an active participant. I can't see you getting people to follow the weekly theme idea unless you're prepared to do a LOT of cleaning.

I mean, you can't even get some people to follow the simple rules there are anyway!

Well how about cleaning for the 'blatent' NOT shots (a shoe, a twig... etc etc) As it has been pointed out before somewhere there may be flowers specific to Sheffield or we may have flowers in bloom here that have not yet bloomed in other cities, therefore making it unique to us....

The thing is, without having something set in complete stone, everyone will interpret the rules how they wish and other than having admins who have the time to go through the pool daily on more than one occaision (of which all of those would have to agree, so you're going to reach more debate there too) it's a nightmare to moderate. On the whole I thnk it's always worked quite well. I know others will disagree that it's boring what goes in the pool but this is why we're now trying to promote discussion and challenges. Something I know JD was hoping to push before taking a step back as an admin himself.

The pool shots will undoubtably be just the same old shots to some but what others do and will come to this group to look for. Just the pics at first. The discussions and challenges are great for those of us who participate on more of a daily basis aswell as encouraging other people into them.

Woo Hoo - Just checked my submissions to the Sheffield pool and not a single portrait (of myself or those close to me), quite lacking in randoms titbits so I'm onto a winner there.

However, loads and loads of cliches - balls, buildings, towers etc so I'm not a complete failure!!
