About Snakes Eastern NorthAmerica (Live, noncaptive, include location)

Live, non-captive snakes photographed in eastern USA or in eastern Canada.

Always put the location of the photo in the photo description.
At a minimum, something like "southern Illinois".

Geographic area:
This group will include photos of snakes taken in, or east of,
Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, or Ontario in continental North America. (In other words we go west as far as the Mississippi River plus one state or fractional part thereof.)
Photos of snakes taken farther west in North America will also be included in this group only if the range of the subspecies extends to the east of the Mississippi River.

Noncaptive means anything other than a pet snake or a snake in a zoo (etc). The snake may be temporarily captive while you photograph it. It does not have to be photographed in a wild environment -- a wild snake in your bathroom or on your driveway is fine.

The goal is to develop an online field guide which might be useful to people who want to learn to identify the snakes they find in the field. Ideally, photos should look like photos in a field guide. The snake must be the subject of the photo. If there is a human in the photo, the snake must be more recognizable than the human.

If known, include the species name in the description.
If you are not sure of the species, please ask for help in identifying it.

Include at least a brief note as to how the snake was found. Like "found under garbage can" or "found on road in the evening".

Only live snakes.

Members of this group might add appropriate tags to any photo submitted to the group.

Limits:
Six photos per day per member.
No more than four photos of any individual snake.

We will also include glass lizards and worm lizards, and any other animal which might reasonably be mistaken for a snake.

I will delete any photo which I do not think belongs here.

Snake species

The Center for North American Herpetology maintains a list of common and scientific names for all snakes species in North America:
CNAH

A list of all snake species in eastern USA and Canada, with links which search our group's pool is in this discussion thread:

Searching for species, etc

The group photos can be searched using the search box at the upper right of this page. To make searching effective, members are urged to be generous in adding tags to their photos. The genus and the state in which the photo was taken should be included either as tags or in the photos title or description. Thus a search for "nerodia tennessee" should display all the photos of nerodia taken in Tennessee. State names should be written out, because the two-character abbreviations often match English words.
